Scorpio Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 (edited) Latest version of Chrome 45.0.2454.85 m, was ok before this version... but now will not download to UNC paths anymore, it seems to only download to Local disks, If you have a UNC server path in the download location you get DOWNLOAD FAILED, if you tick ask where to download option and save to the same location mapped as a Drive letter it works... There is no policy to make the tick box active for ask for download location, so unless each user is instructed to do the setting so they can by pass the standard UNC downloads folder \\server\users\username\downloads then they cannot download anything without it failing... LincolnE Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 We've got this working by using Google Chromes Group Policy template and adding the download directory in there. For us, we've got it mapped to their normal user drive, that already has a mapped drive letter. For use, it's U:\ ${user_name}_Downloads, it seems google doesn't like general system variables for username and instead prefers to use it's own version. Not sure if this will help or not, mind you. 1
Scorpio Posted September 11, 2015 Author Posted September 11, 2015 Yes this was going to be something I was looking at doing, but our path to downloads is still UNC it wont work we only have H: as my docs the rest is one folder back in the home directory, it used to work so this new update must have a bug in it ... Ive reported it to google but whether or not it gets picked up and fixed i dont know.... Cheers

Scorpio Posted November 10, 2015 Author Posted November 10, 2015 Started getting this on all my sites now, must be that they have all auto updated as this never happened with previous versions. I can make the user a domain admin and it works but, not as local admin, its not permissions as they can save to the folder no problems and have full control. Clearly google have changed or messed something up. It recognizes the redirected folder as: \\SERVER\UsersData\Homes$\Username\Downloads This worked in the past... Im reluctant to make changes to the network topology to just get this bug working, so just wondering if anyone has found a fix rather than a workaround.? Cant believe nobody is seeing this issue on a grand scale, we dont map the root of the home folder as users can save to it this way making a mess of the redirected folders, we map h:\ directly to documents so users can save directly to documents, downloads can be access from the start menu User Link where users cannot save file too and make a mess. Any other info would be great on this if anyone has a solution other than above. Cheers
JRowley Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 We map to a root folder and then have a subfolder for Downloads, Documents maps to the root so in effect Downloads appears in their Documents folder. Honestly, I doubt it's a bug. Google have been making a lot of design changes to Chrome lately, this is probably just another one of those. So it's not really about a fix/workaround sadly, they are the same in this case, you need a solution.

Honestly the best bet would be to map Downloads to hidden mapped drive, functionality wouldn't really change, then change Chrome to save to that mapped drive instead.

As the policy "don not allow users to save to their root folder" doesnt work when you map the home share, do you hide it ? How do they access downloads ? We map H to Documents within the home share and let people use the home folder on the start menu to access th other folders which is locked for users saving anything in the root by the above policy. Intrigued how others set theirs up. For now ive mapped U to the root and hidden it then changed the policy in Chrome GPO to point to U:\Downloads which works.... something has defo changed as it was working in previous versions.
JRowley Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 We have it set up like this: Home Drives --- Year 7 ------- ExampleUser1 -------------- Downloads ------- ExampleUser2 -------------- Downloads ExampleUser1 is shared and mapped to H, Documents is redirect to H, within ExamplerUser1 is a folder for Downloads, so Chrome saves downloads in H:\Downloads. I'll note we don't do roaming profiles so that makes things less complicated in that regard, the share is purely for data storage. I think that solution is the most suitable in your case (unless you move Downloads into Documents), it's a bit hacky but unless Chrome change things back there isn't much else you can do.
