SIMS SQL Upgrade Query

Hi,

 

We currently use Microsoft SQL 2012 Express to host our SIMS in school. We have recently paid for SQL standard 2012 and I have been tasked with performing the upgrade.

 

The SQL 2012 standard edition is being installed on the same server that is currently running SQL 2012 express. Can anyone guide me on best practice on performing this upgrade and how to minimise any damage. Is this a difficult task or is it as simple as putting the disk in and pressing upgrade?

Yup, easy. Put disc in, click the upgrade edition, select SIMS2012, job done. Waay easier then previous versions of SQL.

Thanks Matt40k, any idea on how long this process should take? I know that its a bit of difficult question to answer but just trying to get it scheduled in.

Sub-5 mins, takes longer to prep - Download ISO then extract\burn disc. Ideally want to reboot the server afterwards as well.

Just take a backup before hand

Also if it's virtual - take a snapshot - saves time later if things do go awry.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I've found myself in the position of performing an Express to Standard edition upgrade for SIMS with SQL 2014 for one of our schools. I'll do a backup and snapshot and disable network access before the work starts, but I wondered whether anyone who's done this before had any gotchas to be aware of or other steps they'd suggest doing beforehand.

Nope. Just works. Obs you can now just download the ISO and r-click mount.

Thanks Matt40k, for anyone else who encounters this thread in the future, I've just completed the Express to Standard edition upgrade on 2014 and can second the fact that it's incredibly quick, and the prep work does indeed take longer!
