So I fired up my box last night and I'd just logged on and there was a lightning flash very close to the house. It looks as though the EMF has taken out my motherboard. The screen went black and it wouldn't switch off via the front panel. Pulled the plug and put it back in and it won't switch on.

I'm thinking of this m/b https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z97P/ with an i5 processor and 8GB RAM. Should handle Linux nicely. The dead box has https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5QL_PRO/, Pentium Dual Core processor and 2GB RAM, so it's quite a step up.

The bits for my rebuild finally arrived and I spent the weekend getting my PC back on the air. It's all running nicely. I just need to finishing installing all of the software that I use. The dead box was running Mandriva with IceWM. The rebuild has seen a move to openSuse with XFCE. I couldn't get X to stay up with Mageia - it would run, display the desktop and promptly exit. Duuno why and I don't care! It's nice to be able to get to the web on screen bigger than the netbook.
