Hawkeyez Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Hi We are currently on Nottinghamshire County Councils 1C1N, and moving over to their new Virgin provided system. Currently our email is relayed through their email filtering solution (Mail Marshall) but this is being turned off in late September. With that we need to sort ourselves the setup of exchange. Unfortunatly I have been off sick for the last 3 months (wasnt expecting so long), and so now against the wall abit. Currently we have our to domain names MX records pointing to mailmarshall clw.notts.sch.uk and clwacademy.co.uk both have MX records as below Mx01.nottscc.gov.uk 46.18.178.35 Mx02.nottscc.gov.uk 46.18.178.36 And exchange is set to relay via relay.nottscc.gov.uk Is it a case of getting the MX records to point to the external IP address of of server, and changing the option in exchange to "Use Domain name system "MX" records to roue mail automatically"?
featured_spectre Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 yes, but you will also want to get the rDNS and PTF set up to your IP address as otherwise you'll get bouncebacks that they do not match.

featured_spectre Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 speak to your new ISP and put the request in. Ask for it to have IP 10.0.0.1 to mail.school.gov.sch.uk for example.
Hawkeyez Posted August 28, 2015 Author Posted August 28, 2015 We already have mail.xxxxxx already pointing to the external IP address of the exchange server for OWA, and the external IP addresses will be following us.
ijk Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 In addition to those records, which map name to IP address, there needs to be a record (PTR) that maps the IP address to the name. Mail servers will perform a check to ensure that these records tie up. If they do not then mail will likely be rejected. You mention that you are handling mail for two domains. In this case, and unless you insert a relay between your exchange server and the Internet, you require two IP addresses because a PTR should return a single name per IP address. A relay is helpful in this situation because all of your mail related DNS concerns one name/IP regardless of the domain concerned. Hope that's helpful, Nic
