Slow Connection Speed

Hi All.

 

I am hoping someone can help me with an issue I am currently having. The issue is that when our router is connected to our firewall (Watchguard) I see download speeds of around 1-6 Mbps, when I connect my laptop directly to the router I get the full 30 Mbps. If I bypass our router and configure our firewall to use our suppliers router I also get 30 Mbps. I cannot get my head around why each separate (router/firewall) are fine when on their own, but when setup together we see this reduction in download speed. I realise you will require extra info, just let me know what you need to help me out.

check for a duplex mismatch on the ports between your router and firewall. Recommend you force both to 100Mbit

Hi. Thanks for the quick response. I have both set to Auto Negotiate, would you still recommend setting to both 100Mbit?

yes as sometimes autonegotiation doesn't work correctly.

From what I can gather you do not have a switch between the 2 devices. It might be an idea to connect one to see what happens then. A un-managed one should do the trick. Do not use a hub

Sometimes some network ports just don't play nicely with each other - sticking a switch between them means they aren't directly connected together so can avoid some compatibility problems - its definitely worth a go.

Thanks all, i think this is now solved. I tried the router into an unmanaged switch and then onto the firewall. This didn't make any difference. I then took the router out of the mix so had the line in plugged into the switch and then onto the firewall, and I am getting much nearer 30Mbps now. We rent our offices off someone who is supplying us this new line, and they aren't that forthcoming with information on this new line so I've been guessing at how its set-up their side.
