DVD To AVI Software

Any suggestions? Loads of software out there that either doesnt work or watermarks the output. I have a dvd of an old family vhs and I want to avi the file so I can extract a small clip from it.

MakeMKV will strip your DVDs or BluRays down to .mkv files. Around 1.6GB to 22GB for an hour.

 

Handbrake will then encode it, normally in H.264 down to around 600MB to 1.6GB for an hour.

 

Both are free.

 

A warning on Handbrake, if you have a stock cooler and powerful CPU such as an i7 it will push the core temperatures up into the 100 degree range. Until I got a better cooler I had to use ProcessLasso to turn off all but two of my processors threads to keep the heat load below 70 degrees.

I got fed up with trying to faff about with handbrake and other programs. So I got DVD ripper from borosoft. Paid for it (shudder), but it works, its simple to use, and excellent for quickly ripping discs to .mpg to stream from my nas to my firetv stick.

Hi, Yes handbrake can work and so will VLC as @timbo343 mentions . Again with everything on thin planet if you pay for some thing it will always do the Job like @peterp found out.
