SSIS - Anyone Used This?

SQL Server Integration Services.

 

A friend who works in industry (and currently doing some work for big retailers!) gave me a quick whistlestop tour of this and it looks very powerful. Does anyone else use it? Could be useful combined with Command Reporter to take the exported file and transform it into something else such as a database. Seems to need a lot of careful setup and knowledge though!

Yes. This is a key component in Data Warehousing. Specifically it's the ETL bit. I would imagine that if you are fiddling about with database views and ODBC connections to excel spreadsheets you are bascially doing it wrong and should start looking at setting up a Data Warehouse for your Business Intelligence using SSIS, Cubes, etc instead.

We use it extensively for manipulation and reporting from our database, my favourite use is pulling room booking details out of the database and then auto turning them into RSS feeds for Xibo/E-Stream to fire up on the big screen, runs every hour and works extremely well!

And yes it does work very well with command reporter.
