Folder navigation delay in Explorer - My Documents/libraries?

Hi all,

 

My school is about to make the move to 64 bit Windows 7. Not really a huge leap from 32 bit, but we can make more use of the hardware. The computers images I've created so far seems to be fine, staff GPOs appear to be ok as well. However, I've been working on getting folder redirection etc, set up in a new GPO for students and have run into an issue.

 

Clicking; 'Start' - 'Documents' opens the student's home directory/documents, but there is a bit of a delay. This same delay occurs when opening folders. It's probably about 5 seconds. Pressing 'back' does the same.

However, going to; 'Start' - 'Computer' - 'N:\' (User's home directory) works nice and quickly.

 

Probably not a lot to go on, but does anyone have any ideas here? I have created some registry items to allow our students to open files and folders on single click (in the same window). I thought this was where my troubles started, but it doesn't appear to be the case.

 

I could just remove the 'Documents' link from the start menu entirely, but it's what out students are used to. Do you keep this shortcut, have drive mapped in 'Computer', or some other setup?

Ensure that the share permissions on the home folder directory is set to:

 

Everyone > Full Control.

Issue closed now. Just thought I'd update this for anyone else having the same issue - not a fix.

 

I tried building a new GPO from scratch, using bits from a working staff GPO, then altering to fit in with the current student one. This seemed to work, although I still had issues on one of my test machines. This was a different model machine to the other two on the bench. First time you log in, looks right, all works fine. The second, third, etc etc - it lags. So I can't be sure if it was an issue with the GPO, or driver etc now.

 

I decided to remove the Documents link in the end, plus the Libraries links from explorer windows. You can still see these in Word, Phopshop etc when browsing for files, but they don't lag here. Not really a fix for the issue, but I'm running out of time. Plus the whole thing is actually tidier than the original student GPOs we had in place anyway. Folder redirection working and set up for 'Downloads', which wasn't working (pointing to local machine). After pulling my hair out for a while I set the shortcut under 'Favourites' to point to 'N:\Downloads', then created a targeted redirection for each student intake group to their group shares - which then created a 'Downloads' folder under %USERNAME%.

 

I just need to get all the student machines done now before they come back!

Are you using DFS? There's a few hotfixes to resolve issues with slow libraries when using DFS e.g. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2690528

I'm experiencing exactly the same issue!

When I click on one of the libraries I can see in Process Monitor that the CPU usage shoots up to 53% until the delay ends.

Your link to hotfixes, that looks like something I could try. Although I'm concerned about the hotfixes, needing other hotfixes installing afterwards. It's a bit messy.

 

Steve21 - The DFS role is not installed on our file server, so I'm assuming not. I did try that hotfix previously though - which hasn't made a difference unfortunately.

Are you redirecting the Desktop and Start Menu? I've just disabled redirection for them and it seems to solve the issue. What could this mean?

Yep, we do redirect both of these items. But never had the issue on 32bit Windows 7.

Did you redirect to the home folder or a separate share with a generic Desktop and Start Menu?

Separate share for both desktop and start menu.

My x64 start menu folder is in the same share as the x86. The security permissions are the same.

Well I've solved the problem for me. Turned out that I needed Change as well as Read on the share. As soon as I did that problem solved!

Ah, that's interesting.

I've got a 'StudentProfile' share, with students having 'Read' access, then two folders under that - 'Win7Menu' and 'Win7MenuX64', both with default share permissions ('Share...' not 'Advanced Sharing') - 'Students' and 'Everybody' have Read access. Administrators etc have Read/Write. Have you got your folder set up with Advanced Sharing then? I'm assuming so if you've got 'Change' selected. Would you mind sharing your permissions? How is your security permissions set up?

Yes. On the share 'Everyone' has Change and on Security 'Users' have Read and execute.

Well that's really interesting. I set up advanced sharing for desktop and start menu folders (both under the same share). It appears to be the desktop share that was causing the issue for me. Applying to the parent folder and start menu didn't make a difference. But changing the desktop - works like a charm! Nice one grnat!

I'm having a similar issue after disabling offline files. When I click on Documents in the Libraries section on explorer it is really laggy.. any ideas?

Yea I did check those and I saw you got round it by hiding the libraries which is what I'm going to do now and I just wondered if anyone had the same issue and solved it. It's fine with offline files enabled but once I disable offline files it happens again and is really slow to respond to the libraries folders.
