Fluke Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Hi all, I'm trying to get my head around this VPP stuff and sadly getting a bit confused with the whole licence per user thing. We want to licence per machine rather then user for many reasons but everything VPP seems to steer you to licence and deploy to users through their apple IDs etc which seems crazy for students using shared computers (as in many different users using the same mac at different times). I don't want to think about the nightmare of setting each and every user up with an Apple ID. I've seen about using redeemable codes spreadsheet which hope would allow us to deploy to machine rather than user. In an ideal world all I want to do is to buy 50 licences for Logic Pro and install onto 50 macs using Profile Manager. Is this doable?? I cant can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere! TIA!

I'm deploying 80 ipads in class sets for the new school year, and they are enrolled in my DEP account. Each iPad must be enrolled in Profile Manager by navigating the ipad to the enrollment website and downloading the profiles. ONE IPAD AT A TIME! The VPP delivers apps to users, not devices. So this means, for my class sets of ipads, I've been obliged to create fake apple ids and itunes log-ins, one per ipad. I hear that iOS 9 will allow control of ipad devices rather than ipad users, and this problem may go away. In short, you have the unpleasant nightmare of creating fake apple ids for each and every 'user'. I've been at it for 3 weeks solid. I'm not a happy chappy...

VPP apps are delivered to users not devices, and because I have class sets, I've had to create fake apple ids, one per ipad, and delivered apps that way. You may have to do the same with Logic Pro. A related question perhaps you can help me with: the Profile Manager gives options like: Allow configuration profile download, Allow device enrollment and unenrollment. What I'm not clear on is who this instruction addresses. is it saying that *Profile Manager* is allowed to download configuration profile, or is it saying that the *iPad user* is allowed to download configuration profiles? It's probably clear as day to anyone else, but I tend to over-analyse and get myself confused...

Re Profile Manager I am far from an expert, and that is an understatement, I tend to follow things parrot fashion after someone else tells me what to do! But, from what I understand the trust profiles are downloaded onto the client device (ipad/imac etc) and those are what enrol them into PM and remove the placeholder then allow you to push settings/apps etc. So no, they don't give the end users themselves and additional control. I'm sure someone else will be able to clarify this though.

Hi Fluke, Apple's policy for Mac OS X software licences is, to be frank rather muddled at present, this will change and be a lot easier when Apple iD's are no longer required to deploy apps to iPads and Macs. I would not use Profile Manager to deploy the software. There is workaround which will let you deploy a single Mac OS X image to all of them. You would buy the number of licences, in this case 50 of them via your VPP portal using redemption codes. Use the first code in the spreadsheet to redeem Logic Pro X from the Mac App store on the iMac you are using to build the image from. The use your preferred imaging tool e.g Deploy Studio to then create this image to push out to the iMacs. If you are not familiar with Deploy Studio there is a link below.. Marshall_IT Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 With iOS 9 and the new Apple configurator (not sure if they are revamping profile manager too) you can assign VPPs to a device rather than a user. I'm also not too sure how this would work with Macs instead of iPads but it should work in a similar fashion. Also, is there a reason you're using redeemable codes rather than managed distribution? Once the code has been redeemed to a particular apple id it is then stuck with that apple id. One solution for you would to make an Apple ID for each Mac, this is currently the preferred method from Apple. The other is just use the same 'install' Apple ID for all Macs, making sure you still buy enough licences of course.
