When you say old ones do you mean KOTOR, KOTOR 2? if so not really. On the online part there's some references back and small bits of story that are related but I think the first two games can be missed. If you meant the first parts of the online game, I'm quite sure a developer said that people can start new characters at the start of this part of the story

These MMO spin off's are annoying, KOTOR, Elder Scrolls ect were all originally about playing a special and powerful person and kicking ass, now they have been shoehorned into MMO's you are no longer the "special one" and more like the "special 67263725th" and it looses a lot of its charm. I was dreading the fallout 4 announcement might have been some terrible mmorpg but thankfully that didn't happen.

I don't have the time nor inclination for an MMO and just want to experience an epic story in the comfort of my own home with nobody else getting in on the act.
