Remember Google cloud connect? The MSOffice plugin from Google that saves Docs directly to Google cloud....

What happened to that?

Two years ago, we introduced Google Cloud Connect as a free plug-in to help people work in the cloud by automatically saving Microsoft Office files from Windows PCs to Google Drive. But installing Google Drive on your desktop achieves the same thing more effectively—and Drive works not only on Windows, but also on Mac, Android and iOS devices. Existing users will no longer be able to use Cloud Connect as of April 30.

I have just run the installer on a local machine, then found the extracted msi located in a similar folder as above.

I then created a simple GPO to assign the MSI to a test machine. The machine picked up the GPo and installed the MSI.

 

However when I open Office on the test machine save as does not have Google Drive as an option.

 

Would appear only way i can get it to work on the test machine is to install the exe as the user intending on using it.

I was unable to install as administrator on the test machine then log on as a student/staff account and it show in the save as menu within office.

 

Would be interested to hear if anyone has any luck deploying the extracted MSI.

Hopefully Google will release a proper per-machine MSI soon, but in the mean time you could try the attached MST I created to go with the MSI extracted from the EXE installer. This should force it to install to the ProgramFiles folder instead of LocalAppData.

Edit. After opening at the MSI with InstEd it looks like the enterprise MSI still installs to the LocalAppData folder.

try the attached MST I created to go with the MSI extracted from the EXE installer. This should force it to install to the ProgramFiles folder instead of LocalAppData.

 

Has anyone successfully deployed this?

We are looking at ways to increase the use of Google Drive and alleviate the burden on our internal file servers. The problem we keep facing is: "Do i have to download the PowerPoint/Active Inspire file everytime i want to use it?" - In their eyes it's no better than SharePoint....

I don't use this because our MSOffice footprint is so small now that I don't need it, so I'm not really sure of the advantages. For the article:

In particular, the plug-in authentication flow has been updated as part of Google’s effort to modernize OAuth interactions in native applications. The new authentication flow requires users to authenticate via the default browser on their system, and not through embedded browsers known as “web-views.”

 

This week, we’ll begin automatically updating all plug-ins. If you previously disabled Google Update or installed the Google Drive plug-in in an environment that does not allow for automatic updates, please download and deploy the latest plug-in version (1.7.17.0).

 

You must upgrade to version 1.7.17.0 before 20 April 2017. Starting on that date, you will not be able to sign in to older versions of the plug-in.

I guess there is no way to automatically sign the user in? We have SAML setup, its should just be a case of getting that username in and automatically agreeing the access rights somehow.

edit: Tried to solve it myself. I used process monitor to watch for every registry check that was performed when Office launched and spotted it checking for IsRemindWelcome. Is that how you knew about it?

Apologies for necroposting but I was wondering how you knew about this registry key?

I used RegFromApp to find the registry value that was changed before and after the Welcome dialog box had been shown.

 

It can be a lot quicker/easier to find what you're after compared to Process Monitor (as long as the setting is stored in the registry).

Wow, I wasn't sure I'd get a response to a year old post ever, let alone a few minutes later! That's amazing and I really appreciate it

 

Thanks for the tip. When I launched processmon and it logged 250000 events in the few seconds before I'd even opened Office, I thought it might not be the easiest solution! Luckily you can highlight keywords and then jump between them directly.
