Allo,

 

Trying to get my head around the performance of VEEAM whilst backing up our ESXi hosts.

We have a host that performs well, one of the servers is around 3TB and backs up at a whopping 11MB/s with the bottleneck apparently at the source. That's fine on incremental but that initial & weekly backup literally takes days.

Veeam runs as a VM on another host, backing up to above host to an iscsi attached Synology target. Only a gigabit link between them but should be getting better speeds than that. I've tried setting up a proxy on one of the guests on that host and it doesn't appear to help.

 

Any advice on that would be much appreciated. Veeam's KB seems to be full of diagrams dedicated to making my head hurt.

We've found the biggest helpers are lots or CPU and RAM on the VEEAM Proxies, and also making sure the controller of the host being backed up has BBU or flash cache if using local storage on ESXi hosts.

Both correct; full gigabit on the management port, plenty of resources available for the proxy yet still no joy. Starting to think its the host, we have other issues which will result in a changed RAID setup next week. (General performance and benchmarks are good, yet on the host side of things it's a different story!)

We have a pair of hosts which are absolutely identical with exception to the RAID controller. The other one is pukka.

Have you tried just backing up that one server on its own and exclude it from the main backup? Has this just started happening or has it been doing all the time?

It's been doing it all the while, although we've only really just noticed it as we've started shifting things around and starting again with 3TB of backups just for that server.

Can't seem to get it out of network mode either, even with a proxy installed on the host I'm backing up, backing up to the synology volume which is iscsi connected to the veeam server it's always falling back to NBD.
