Jons Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Hello. We're trying to using the DBUpgrade tool to run a patch (a plugin called HCSS or something). Our version of dbupgrade.exe is 2.30.x Is there a newer version and where may we obtain it..? It might not be compatible with SQL2014 which we are running.... We cannot upgrade the database (of course - this is SIMS folks), as we cannot login to the database at all. I have tried every combination of Trusted/SIMS/IP address/SQL instance and database name but no chance. Also tried command line but also no luck. Help.
Damon Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Hi Jons, the dbupgrade.exe is deployed from the SIMSSQLApplicationsetup.exe in the SIMS Setups directory. Assuming the file is up to date and relevant for your version of SIMS, run the exe to update your SQL binn folder. However, it sounds like the real problem is that you can't login to SQL/Dbupgrade. Rather than trying combinations of SQL instance and database name, you can confirm those by checking the Connect.ini file which is usually stored within the main SIMS directory. Report back if you can't find this file as there are plenty of ways to obtain the info. Try running the patch again with the correct instance/db name and see how you go. If it still fails, then you may want to try and reset the SA pass via a script. However, bear in mind that there may be other services relying on that password so you need to check the impact on backups and so on. On that note, I'd check through the scheduled tasks to see if there's some old batch files that mention the SA password.
Damon Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 FYI just checked for reference and the Spring dbupgrade is 2.30.2.0
Jons Posted July 15, 2015 Author Posted July 15, 2015 Thanks Damon. I did check the sims.ini and connect.ini and I can see the instance name from SQL management studio - it is SERVER\SIMS2014 I have 2 radio buttons on the right - trusted and SIMS. I know the first uses my Windows credentials (no luck). The second allows a SIMS ID and password to be entered. This screenshot from their notes does not feature the radio buttons. I assume server name is SERVER\SIMS2014 but this doesn't wash. I'm sure we used DBupgrade for each spring, summer patch etc, as we are forced to do this manually. We use DBUPGRADE /NOBACKUP and did not have a problem that I recall..
Jons Posted July 16, 2015 Author Posted July 16, 2015 As I recall the sa password can be set in SQL management studio. It is either blank or a known password - not sure where dbupgrade obtains this from?
Damon Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Hi Jons, That screenshot is pretty out of date as you'd guessed. The Server name is indeed SERVER\SIMS2014 and I'm guessing your database name is SIMS. SQL management studio can confirm that though by expanding the database folder. If you have trusted access via SQL management studio, you may be able to reset the sa pass by expanding the security folder, going into logins, right click on sa and select properties. You can overwrite the password and click OK to save. Unfortunately, if the Trusted option in dbupgrade isn't working then you probably won't have any luck with the aforementioned. Worth a try anyway. If not, can you go to services and check what user account the following service is running as: 'SQL Server (SIMS2014)'.
Jons Posted July 16, 2015 Author Posted July 16, 2015 Ah, we fixed this now - the zip needed to be unzipped (to reveal another zip). Useful info above though - for future readers. Thanks again.
