Hello, I looked on here for options to filter the internet based on keywords entered by children. As you may know this has to be in place by September. Yeah, right. I see a lot of large footprint options such as Smoothwall and Policy Central (spit). We don't want any of this nonsense, and this small school only has 1 server at the moment. Introducing another server for this monitoring purpose is like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Does anyone know of a cloud-based option or filtering the keywords via the Link2ICT firewall (McAffee I understand - we are a Birmingham school) ? We want the smallest footprint possible with the least admin. I note LANSchool looked OK but no keyword monitoring :/ Lord help us.

I have run SOLUS2 (SOLUS 3 not in use) and applied the upgrade (DBUPGRADE /NOBACKUP) which has updated the database. I could not find any new SIMSApplicationSetup.exe etc - they had not been populated. I had to run the SIMSApplicationSetup.exe 1.6xxxxxxxxxxx to 1.6xxxxxxxxxxxxxx in the upgrade folder (long hex number) to produce SIMSApplicationsetup.exe. I might add that we had a 'cannot download SIMSDocumentServerInstaller.exe' error message from SOLUS.

Hello, thanks for replies. It transpired the problem was Windows Firewall on the server. I disabled it and eportal works instantly everywhere. Thanks!

Hello, we have ePortal up and running (on two servers in fact) and people can log in and submit the registers. This data was not appearing in CMIS / attendance however - but this appears to have fixed now. Only change was entering the previous licence into Facility Controller. (Facility Dataserver is pointed to the right server and dataset, and client configuration as NamePIPES.) Now our problem is that no clients resolve the page http://server:8080/eportal That address appears OK on the server itself. I think it is running with Tomcat / Apache, as there is no IIS stuff on this server. Ideas?

Ah, we fixed this now - the zip needed to be unzipped (to reveal another zip). Useful info above though - for future readers. Thanks again.

As I recall the sa password can be set in SQL management studio. It is either blank or a known password - not sure where dbupgrade obtains this from?

Thanks Damon. I did check the sims.ini and connect.ini and I can see the instance name from SQL management studio - it is SERVER\SIMS2014 I have 2 radio buttons on the right - trusted and SIMS. I know the first uses my Windows credentials (no luck). The second allows a SIMS ID and password to be entered. This screenshot from their notes does not feature the radio buttons. I assume server name is SERVER\SIMS2014 but this doesn't wash. I'm sure we used DBupgrade for each spring, summer patch etc, as we are forced to do this manually. We use DBUPGRADE /NOBACKUP and did not have a problem that I recall..

Hello. We're trying to using the DBUpgrade tool to run a patch (a plugin called HCSS or something). Our version of dbupgrade.exe is 2.30.x Is there a newer version and where may we obtain it..? It might not be compatible with SQL2014 which we are running.... We cannot upgrade the database (of course - this is SIMS folks), as we cannot login to the database at all. I have tried every combination of Trusted/SIMS/IP address/SQL instance and database name but no chance. Also tried command line but also no luck. Help.

Hello Since we updated SIMS/Discover we can only run Discover from the server or a client machine logged in as administrator. Discover doesn't ask for a login and instead goes straight in without a prompt. Clearly it is using the admin credentials, but I don't know where this setting is? Any other user logged into Windows asks for Discover login and then reports "There was a problem loading the catalog." Running SQL 2014 with the databases in SQL 2012 compatibility mode. Any ideas? I agree with TechMonkey. SIMS & Discover are too fragile to be hosted in schools long term. InTouch was unreliable and bloated. SIMS/Discover should be used as a cloud hosted product, through the browser. Capita offer this hosted SIMS service. The truth is when we compare CMIS and SIMS in 2015, the former is a simple and fairly robust product, but the latter is held together by glue. Every error and fix in the book is repeated when trying to support it.

Anyone know how much Link 2 ICT charge for this? I would ask them but trying to avoid the sales patter..

I see, those would be Capita's prices then. And another SIMS hosted service from Service Birmingham - how does this compare I wonder? Most primary schools will have more than 10 users if you include teachers. Unless we can use a generic "teacher" login which can then select the class group to mark. Similar with Discover. Then we would only need the office accounts + 1 teacher account...

Yes I had this problem, my solution was - ON THE SERVER- Uninsall SIMS Discover services from add/remove progs. Run the Discover CD setup, server typical installation with SERVER\SIMS2008 or SERVER\SIMS2012 etc Note the first screen asks for the database - Discover The second screen looks identical but is asking for the SIMS database Then I immediately ran the Discover client on the server (useful) and the databases actually validate (often don't on a remote client) Then you should have a proper icon for Discover Transfer Utility and Discover Client in the SIMS folder on the start menu Then the transfer worked first time... Cheers.

UPDATE We think this was caused by a network problem. Anyway, the CMIS database was restored and the budget is back, baby.

Hello. Our Secretary reports the budget is missing in CMIS. Fiscal movements appear to be stored, as budgets are empty but it is displaying nothing. Tried diff. machines, on server, validate structure etc. We had the problem a few months ago, Link2ICT report it cannot be fixed without a database restore, but we fixed it with something simple. Ideas? Thanks.

Yes we had similar at our school, even if putting the proxy into Java settings in control panel (but it picks up IE settings anyhow). Instead we purchased MinecraftEDU version and that installer worked fine.

I have experience of Panda Cloud AV in schools. The problem we had was opening My Computer and clicking on a network drive (wireless laptop). The system froze and would not respond for maybe 30 or 50 seconds. Then it released and lists the contents of the network drive. This occured on every XP machine we installed on. Our conclusion was that Panda is checking the cloud when you access files or folders for some reason, perhaps on-access style. This is over wi-fi alongside the network drive access, so perhaps it was a bandwidth issue, but our wireless was quick otherwise. So we had no choice but to remove Panda.

Hello, I tried the script but the CMD box reads: Access Denied on each line. I added Enterprise Admins to local group Admins (a common error when manually removing Sophos) but no luck. PSExec is running OK but if you know why this is not completing let me know! Thx.

Now I was at a family barbeque when this happened.

We need projectors with ethernet ports. Then once you have the IP addresses reserved in DHCP or static you can look at the units which are still on, using your browser. Can even monitor lamp life too. At the very least a batch file to ping the IP and if active tells you the location so you may go and switch it off. Especially Fridays.

I agree with Pottsey. We examined 2 lamps installed on the same date with new projectors. The first to expire was the teacher who had been turning it off and on for lunch, about 1500 hrs I think. The lamp left on at lunch lasted 2500 hrs, again general figs. So the expansion and contraction of a hot/cold/hot/cold lamp precipitated an early demise. Nerdy, eh?

OpenDNS has filtering in the cloud. So you simply change your DNS servers in your DHCP scope and no software/hardware onsite. This has to be the lowest maintenance way forward. However it isn't that cheap. Really needs group buying with other schools. We investigated alternative i/net connection in Sandwell and we found the best option (price and speed) was to stay with current provider and wait for FTTC outside the school.

Hi I'm thinking of leaving one of my customers, a school in south Birmingham. I visit 1 day per week.
