birchanger Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 I'm replacing our aged backup system and have a number of proposals in front of me. Most are for Veeam, which I know enough about to be impressed, but one is for Unitrends. I kow nothing about it. Can anyone recommend/disrecommend/comment?

It simply reads an XML file it creates for every backup it does of a VM. You can get a 10 day free trial key and keep requesting a new one to the same e-mail address until you're happy to pay for the full product. 1
Geoff Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 We looked at these recently. Veeam works really well if everything is virtualised. However we also have some physical servers and some tape backups (tape handling in Veeam is a bit naff). So we considered Unitrends because of these two reasons. We decided to just carry on with Backup Exec for those machines and get Veeam though. 1
rich_tech Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 We use Veeam B+R here for all our VMs and it works a treat, recently had to use its restore function for the first time too after a debacle with AV being mistakenly installed onto our host nodes and that worked flawlessly 1
localzuk Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 We settled on Veeam for our Hyper-V backups recently. Got it set up now, working well. The initial backup of 1.4TB of VMs took a matter of hours, and our overnight incrementals take about 4 hours total. We stuck with BackupAssist for our "data" backup (as our fileserver isn't virtualised).

Which is what happened to me earler in the year on version 8.x. This prompted me to look at other alternatives and a lot of testing later, I plumbed for Trilead VM Explorer. It's got everything you need in comparison to Veeam. Great thing is, is that the .MSI is 30MB and can be installed on any Windows OS (workstation or server).
