Veeam Endpoint Free with Backup and Replication

Hi,

Is anyone using the free version of Veeam Endpoint Protection for physical servers and sending the backup files to a Veeam Backup and Replication repository and then onto tape?

 

I am thinking this could be a way of getting all my backups into one place.

 

Anyone tried?

I've tried it and i would not recommend that you use it for backing up your servers. Most of the time you will see your backups failing, which is what I experienced on a 2008 R2 server and 2012 R2. In the end I opted for BackupAssist which is 10 times better and easier to use. Well worth the money an' all.

I only have one physical server (which isn't a Hyper V Host) left, I was using DPM but have switched over to Veeam Endpoint, it's working well and hasn't failed once. It backs up to the Veeam repository and then is also sent to another repository (backup copy job) daily and then to tape once a week all alongside the VM backups.

We have all virtual servers, except one physical DC and a fileserver.... we want to do the same thing as you (OP). however i can't find anyinfo on whether the Veeam Endpoint retains and restore ntfs file permission on network shares.

Yes we have 3 physicals left (one Physical DC, Backup Server and Another Physical host that has a few small roles).

I have it set to backup to Veeam Repositories (one on the actual backup server, and the other on the last physical host, but mapped back to the backup server).

It seems to be working great, but the only lacking point I can see is that you cannot run SureBackup on the Endpoint Backups from within VEEAM B+R to validate the backups.

I have even tried a restore of the last physical host as a test back to the Virtual infrastructure as a VM, which works brilliantly!.

I did shutdown the last physical host, and disconnect the vNIC on the restored VM to negate any duplicate IP issues etc.

 

You need Veeam B+R 8 Update 2b, and a specific version of Veeam Endpoint (0.9??) but have a look at their site, I think something is on there.

Yes, although you might want to choose files and folders backup...

The best option would be to do a P2V on the sims server, or build a new VM and get capita to assist you with a migration..
