Veeam setup

So, we're moving to Veeam to backup our Hyper-V VMs, and I just want some advice on how I'm going to set it up. It appears to be more suited to the job than our current software.

 

Our intention is to backup to a NAS on our network, and then we'll perform a copy of the latest backup to an USB drive elsewhere, which will be taken off-site.

 

Our Hyper-V setup is as such:

 

2 Nodes, using shared SMB3.0 storage, on a 2012 server.

 

Do I just install Veeam on the storage server?

We have a dedicated backup server with its own storage performing the function of your NAS box there, so because it's a full Windows box we run Veeam on that. It's got 4 cores and 16GB RAM and purrs along nicely.

I think you have three options:

 

1) Put Veeam on it's own VM and point it at a SMB/CIFS share on the NAS

2) Put Veeam on it's own VM and install the Veeam proxy on the NAS.

3) Put Veeam directly on the NAS.

 

I think I'd go for 2) or 3) depending on the spec of the NAS and it's OS, but I don't have experience in this area as my backups are all local storage on the Veeam physical server.

Sorry, I've just realised that your 'NAS' and 'Storage server' aren't the same thing; I mis-read the initial post.

 

Your options therefore become:

 

1) Put Veeam on it's own VM and point it at a SMB/CIFS share on the NAS

2) Put Veeam on the Storage server and point it at a SMB/CIFS share on the NAS

 

I guess it depends on the spec of each as to your preference here.
