The Datacenter license is quite new as we only recently purchased a server that is used as a VM host. When I'm purchasing this new server, do I need still need to purchase it with a base OEM license, like you do with desktops? Also, it says quantity 1 (0 left) but I though the whole point of having OVS is that you pay the subscription and can use the licenses as many times as you like.

 

Also, our CALS are down as 2012 but the server I purchased recently is 2012R2 and all the VMs are 2012R2. It isn't being used in production yet because I've been setting up a new domain on it but in the Summer it will replace our old 2012 server. Will I need 2012R2 CALS?

Its a hard one. I got different answers. The general answer is that you dont need a OEM for server, but i couldnt get a definate answer with EES.
