Demoting one of our 2008R2 DC's

Im just about to start migrating our DC's to 2012 R2 and about to demote the first 2008R2 and cant remember if when running dcpromo, it it removes DNS from that server also or if i have to remove it manually?

It removes the DNS configuration but I believe it still leaves the role installed

If i demote it, (i have two other DC's) will it cause issues for users that are potentially authenticated to it? or will it re-authenticate clients and servers to another one?

Users\Devices should seamlessly authenticate to another DC. But unless it's pressing you could always demote Out of Hours to alleviate any concerns

Make sure you amend your DHCP setting to change the DNS Server
