I suspect if you had the tools to do a BGA reflow you'd get it working again, but I don't (and after recently melting a PS3 mobo in the oven, I thought I'd quit while I'm ahead on the DIY front!) Yeah it's a real PITA. I get why the EU are enforcing leadless solder (it's extremely hazardous and is polluting our water streams), but it's a major problem for electronics. Wish somebody could figure out a way to make leadless solder that didn't disintegrate after a couple of years! I did think about having this sent off for a reflow, but TBH I have no interest in Macs. I was excited when it was handed to me because I'm sure I'd have enjoyed learning the ins and outs of it, but I'm not prepared to spend ~£100 getting it working.
