apple ipad to apple tv plus internet on ipad

Hi all I am using a wireless network to connect my ipad to apple tv which works well should I still be able to use the wireless connection on the ipad for internet use or is it locked exclusively for the screen share to the apple tv ?

You can send a video via Airplay and then press the home button to carry on using the iPad and open up say Safari or Mail while the video plays on the Apple TV. Just Airplay it, don't mirror and it will work this way.

Ah ok but I could not say for example show a website to all the class from the ipad to the tv ? or stream youtube ?

It shouldn't affect the internet at all. Both the iPad and the Apple TV should be connected to your wifi network, so even with screen mirroring enabled, the ipad is still connected to your wifi and should still be able to access the internet. Check that your iPad is connected to your wifi on the same network as the Apple TV and not connecting directly to the Apple TV, because this would be an isolated ad-hoc network.

Im getting confused now, i thought the class would be watching a video and you want to use the iPad to view the web while this happens?

 

If you mirror, what happens on your iPad happens on the Apple TV, if you just Airplay without mirror, you can stream Video to the Apple TV and also at the same type load another app (not all but most) while the video plays.

sorry to confuse my issue is that although the apple tv and ipad are connected to the same wireless network when I mirror the display from the ipad to the apple tv the internet no longer works on the ipad however the second I stop mirroring it works again.

What I'm thinking is that when you enable airplay mirroring, a direct p2p network is being created with the Apple TV, bypassing your wifi network altogether. I know that since IOS8 this is the default connection method for Airplay. I would just make sure that the Apple TV is definitely connected to your network (maybe try using Ethernet instead of Wifi) and that the Apple TV has internet access, including any proxy settings (maybe when airplay mirroring is enabled, the Apple TV is being used as a router by the iPad)

 

You can also try enabling "Conference Room Display" in the Apple TV's Airplay settings. This might force Airplay to stream through the network rather than using an ad-hoc connection.
