Copy GPO from one server to another (different domains)

Hi All,

 

I'm on with setting up new GPOs on a server at one of my sites, we've only recently taken over and it's a mess. At the minute everyone is working with all their work locally on their laptops so not ideal!

 

We've created new OUs, and I'm just about to start new GPOs so we can move all staff, student and PCs across and have the new policies take over.

 

I've recently done this at another site, so I was wondering if there's a way of just backing up the GPO I want, and importing it into this other server to save having to set it all up?I've then got a template for the future too.

 

Both are server 2008 R2.

 

I've realised the backup option in GP Editor, but I'm under the impressions it's not as straight forward as I would expect.

 

Anyone know a way? Is it worth bothering?

You're right, it is simply a case of backing up the GPO, copying it to USB flash, then importing it into the new server. Just remember to change server references, such as UNC paths etc...

No not at all!

 

The only other tip I can offer is to use the same templates per server, despite the fact they're both running 2008 R2. I use the latest Windows 8.1 templates on 2008 R2 on all servers, keeping things simple.
