Hi I would if someone could help with this...

I have a server 2008 R2, 7 staff windows 7 laptops and 60+ windows 7 pc for pupils and staff to use.

The server is setup for redirect of documents, start menu and desktops.

The pupils has a separate desktop, start menu redirections to the staff.

The school would like some changes done.

The staff laptop to be setup so the desktop and start menu are synced so they can be taken off site so they are the same as when they are at school.

I have got the documents syncing fine which was the easy bit.

Now here is the problem. The school does not want the staff to write to the desktop and start menu.

I have been trying out a few things with robocopy, which seems to be working. I can get the desktop and start menu to copy to local folder on the laptop and when the laptop is off site the desktop/start menu are usable as i want.

However the staff can write on the desktop, which i dont want. When the laptops are brought back into school, the robocop script runs and sny newly created files/folders are lost.

As this server was setup for redirecting (pupils and staff) and not for syncing. Is there an easy way i can get want the school requires with out doing major changes to polices.

Thanks for all your help

Andrew

Can you not just sync the network location where the redirection points to? Then when at home the redirection will work and maintain the permissions

We just use group policy to set the desktop icons using the shortcuts option , we use mandatory profiles anyway which are essentially locked down.

well theres one issue if you take a laptop offsite and it has a mandatory profile its not going to allow the user to logon as the profile \\server\profiles$\staff\staff.man.v2 is not going to be accessible and so they wont be able to log on.

Your going to need to convert to roaming or local profiles. Either way if you redirect start menu/desktop to \\server\offsite$\win7\startmenu & \\server\offsite$\win7\desktop then if folder sync is enabled on the share and laptop it should look the same as it will just use the cached local copy of the start menu/desktop as if it was the network copy
