God damn, that job could have been written for me! Shame it's in Chatham and not Greenwich, no way I could commute there

Don't know where you live @Norphy, but there's a great train service to Chatham... and it's relatively cheap because you're going "the wrong way" if you're travelling out of London. I commuted there from Beckenham for several years.

I live in harpenden which is north of London. There is a train direct to Beckenham from here in the mornings but that takes 80-90 minutes in itself. Any increase in pay that I'd get would soon be eaten up and I'd spend as long on the train as I do at work. Greenwich would be a trek but would be doable, just, but Chatham would be a no from here

Possibly. My other half is from Beckenham and she'd probably jump at the chance at moving back there or somewhere near it. I'm only renting and we're out of contract so it's not as if we're tied to the place.

 

Rents in London are a lot higher though...

Coming out to nearer Medway is much cheaper. We moved from rented in Beckenham to buying in Tonbridge so I could commute to Chatham and Mr Gee40 to Croydon where he was working at the time. Beckenham is expensive now. I would suggest moving closer to Medway than us, which is still an easy drive or train ride to Beckenham.
