[sims] Long Term sick appearing in cover

I am new to using the cover module and have noticed that the module gets bloated out with staff who are on long maternity leave and also the odd one on long term illness. Is there a way that i can stop this happening so that me screen is not nearly full before i start adding any type of normal cover?
