Hello everyone,

We have recently just installed SCCM 2012 R2 and all is working great, except from the fact that when we install the Configuration Manager client on the SCCM server it will not auto assign the Site ID. Every other client that we have deployed the client has managed to auto assign the Site ID to it and they all work as expected.

When trying to manually assign the Site ID to the Configuration Manager client on the SCCM server itself it says: Failed to update site assignment

I'm stumped as to why this is happening.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks. :)

Why are you installing the SCCM client on a site server?

We have setup a replacement instance of SCCM as we wanted to start from scratch with it. Our previous instance which was set up by our support company had the SCCM client on the site server which is the reason I am trying to install it on this new replacement instance.

Is it not recommended to install the SCCM Client on the site server?

God's honest truth, I'm not sure. It's never been something I've considered doing. A quick google doesn't reveal any answers one way or the other.

What are you hoping to achieve by installing the client on the site server? I'm just trying to understand the rationale behind this.

We're also using Endpoint Protection 2012 and by installing the client on the site server we can deploy our custom Endpoint Protection policy to it.

Anyway, I have managed to get it to work.

I updated our site with the latest hotfix (CU5) straight after I had installed SCCM 2012 R2. It would appear that if you try to install the client (from scratch) on the site server after installing the hotifxes, you have to install the update the manually otherwise the client won't work. Must be a bug or something.
