Papercut MF - the user dashboard

To all those using Papercut MF - I was wondering what your views are on the fact students are able to see staff usage.

 

What I mean by this is, on the desktop client which sits on the users desktop to display their credit there is a link on there which says "Details", they login to see their summary and there is a link at the bottom of the summary "Open Environmental Dashboard". What they are able to see here is their environmental stats however in the address bar it has the following URL: http://server:9191/environment/dashboard/*username*.

 

Students think they are cleaver by changing the username part to the username of a staff member to see their stats and have started saying "you're not at the top of the leaderboard (sir/miss)"

 

I swear, our students will literally click on anything they see!

In my last school, students were able to go into debit and give credits to each other. One student kindly gave the IT Teacher 1 million printing pounds! How generous!

I know what you mean - exploring any software is always good fun in what you'll find

 

I guess at the moment you could say that this is working as it was first intended, which was it being added together with Windows 8 live tile updates. The reasons for not putting the environmental dashboard behind a user login is because the live tile information can't be login protected, and so in turn, neither was the dashboard. We've designed this to contain as little information about the user as possible, but can definitely see students getting a bit of a big head if they found out printing habits!

 

We've always recommended that if this were something that caused a few issues, then you would be able to turn if off via the Options -> Config Editor, then searching "user.environmental-impact.enable" and changing this to N. This will mean that the environmental details for each user is completely disabled though. When it IS disabled, the URL is still able to be viewed, however it will show the entire organisations usage rather than being able to see a specific users print habits.

 

We also have got a lot of requests about developing a way to password, so I'll add this as an informal request for development!

Sounds like it wasn't set up to disallow transfers when people were unrestricted! Always a fun one to play with that feature when you have infinite money!
