Data Recovery

I had a user that saved an excel file to the desktop (non redirected).

The PC was re-imaged and the file lost.

 

So I fired up my data recovery software of choice and lo and behold there is no file to recover.

There are files from years ago, but no record of the file from a few days prior.

 

What are the chances of this happening? There should be a remnant or something right?

Depends where it was written really.

 

The re-image only does a quick format normally so removes the markers, but if it happens that the one file you wanted was overwritten by something, and those old files are in a section that hasn't been that would happen etc.

I'd say you had little chance with a reimaged machine, depends on where the file physically was on the drive.

I mistakenly re-imaged my wife's laptop (chose the wrong partition) and lost all her photos of 3 years worth from her iPhone. Using Ontrack EasyRecovery Data Recovery software recovered more than 50% while all the other ones (recuva, undelete etc) didn't.

I've used testdisk (photorec) and get data back so far, these are normally enough to get back everything.
