Migrating from exchange to cloud question

Hello,

Email is one of the things I admit to knowing little about when it comes to the enterprise so apart from a few Exchange/mailbox tweaks, I am very much a total noob to this so please go easy, don't use any big words and pictures and or puppet use in any response are encouraged.

 

Is it possible to split my email between onsite exchange and gmail? To my understanding, my local broadband supplier (in this case, run by the county council) own my domain so mail is routed to them and they push it onto me and my exchange.

I am sure I have heard of some schools migrating some mailboxes (students for example) to google mail/365 while maintaining staff onsite? Before I goto my supplier and ask the question, I would like to know if....

 

1/ Did I dream this is possible or is it real?

2/ What exactly am I asking for? I assume there would be a tech term to ask when talking about directing certain mailboxes to somewhere else.

 

I would love to push just my email to google to start with so I have something to show the higher ups when I put it to them again as they are shaky about an entire migration at the moment.

It is possible but not sure to what extent with gmail. With Exchange Online and On Premise Exchange its called a hybrid setup. When that is setup you can have both cloud and on premise mailboxes. Users will not notice a difference between who is on site and who isn't. They will be able to see each other in the GAL etc. I use this when I migrate people from Exchange On Premise to Exchange Online. Its not hard to setup either.
