Eye test results. Anyone know anything about them? Variations.

Hi,

 

Does anyone know anything about eye test results. I've had three different test done now over two weeks and each is different.

 

1.

Eye. Sph. Cyl. Axis.

R -0.25 -0.75 100

L -0.5 -0.25 75

 

2.

Eye. Sph. Cyl. Axis.

R -1.00 -0.75 -87.5

L -0.75 -0.25 50

 

3.

Eye. Sph. Cyl. Axis.

R -1.00 -0.50 90

L -1.00 -0.25 67

 

Don't know where to start. These are my first ever tests and confused as to why each are so different and which to go for.

 

They all say my right eye is worse but can't understand why the first sphere value increases so much and the axis is all over.

 

Can anyone shed some light?

 

It was interesting how each place did their tests. Some places completely skipped tests, some did tests to different detailed levels.

A lot of it can depend on your answers, if you see "left" better than "right" one time, but say opposite another it obviously can skew results slightly

 

But from yours, all showing long sighted (Goes up in 0.25 so 0.75/1 isn't huge difference imho)

 

In terms of the Axis I'm assuming you had a different optician do that one, the positive and negative part isn't as it sounds its just a different way of writing it only goes 0-180 on the positive side.

 

So either s/he wrote it wrong and didn't mean to add the - or just using the other notation. It's not (or shouldn't be) saying it's completely changed etc.

Told all three places that it's my first test and didn't get asked if one eye is better.

 

Think the one that worries me the most is the sphere difference.

 

 

Test 1 at Tesco was brilliant, they did all the tests and I thought the bit where you try the lenses was best.

2 was boots and they skipped the air test and the lens test had loads of dots which I didn't really like but did a very good eye exam where they look at your eye.

3 was specsavers and they skipped the photo machine and air test and seemed to rush the final lens test and I thought that the the letter wall that you look at didn't go small enough to really test. They had some very nice glasses though.

I am amazed you had three different tests! I have worn glasses for the best part of 30 years. The "air tests"you talk of are testing for glaucoma (raised pressure in the eye) and have nothing to do with your prescription. So the presence, or absence, of those means nothing. Unless you have family history, few opticians will test for glaucoma until you are more mature.

Your test results are very marginally different. I am shortsighted, like you, indicated by the negative result. However, on a scale... my eyes are both -4.something... I wear my glasses all the time. Hayfever, and tiredness, can affect the results. The Sphere is the lens power and that is what you need to concern yourself with first. This would suggest that results 2 and 3 are more likely to be accurate than 1 to me.

 

Your prescription can be taken anywhere to be made up, so feel free to take the Boots prescription to Specsavers if you prefer the frames!

Test one seems very far out to me but the others are broadly the same.

Definitely SHORT sighted but not very - I am -3.25 in one eye and -3.5 in the other, but I wear -3 in both as the difference is marginal and it saves mixing up my contact lenses!

The fun you can have with just one visit to Specsavers...

 

1st prescription was manufactured 90degrees out. Result - headaches worse than before.

 

2nd prescription the decimal point was printed on the box line. instead of 1.2 (or something) I got 12. I didn't even leave the shop with those.

As a fellow short sighted person, I'm -3.00 and -2.00 in Left and Right eyes respectively. The other numbers are simply related to the curvature of your eyeball and how light refracts through the lens as the shape of your spectacle lenses will need to make sure the light is sent to the right part of the eye. A lot of factors can affect these measurements including blood pressure, dehydration, irritated eyes etc.

 

A lot of it is subjective too. They work out the prescription by trying different lenses and asking 'better or worse'. You REALLY need to 'play the system' to get it spot on. Rather than saying 'can't tell', get them to give you the options again and if it's even SLIGHTLY blurred, say so. Don't be afraid to challenge the optometrist - this is your vision and health. I recently had a problem where a pair of my glasses were slightly too strong, which mean't my right eye got used to not having to try, then I saw a different optometrist who said 'that prescription is too strong' and reduced the values in my right eye - total nightmare. Made me throw up. Had to get the lens remade to the old prescription.

 

I certainly wouldn't trust prescription 1 - it seems really far out compared to the other two...

Eyes are funny.

 

My last test indicated that my eyes have improved, but maybe the test was just a fluke? It's hard to tell really because after wearing a prescription for a few days your eyes compensate and you 'adapt' to them so they currently feel fine (but my old prescription felt fine too!).
