PC not running Genuine Windows

I keep getting told by a reliable tutor (With screenshot evidence!) that a PC keeps coming up with a popup 'This computer is not running Genuine Windows'

 

The thing is, when I go across and check the System properties it says 'Windows is activated' and it shows as such in the KMS console, so I'm baffled as to what is going on?!

Has it fallen off the domain as we have had laptops fall off or come off the domain and we use a kms / licensing server to activate each installation of windows

 

Also is dns resolving to your server that runs kms

 

There are some commands you can run from an administrative command prompt to set the kms server to your kms server and also to try and force windows to activate ( I think )

Slmgr /dli will show you the licensing state. Domain membership shouldn't play a role afaik

Slmgr /skms servername will set the kms server. But tbf it should find it from AD. Slmgr /ato will activate a client.

You could also use this "nslookup -type=srv _vlmcs._tcp >%temp%\kms.txt" to check dns for other kms servers. When setting up kms people have been known to accidentally set up other kms servers lol @harriuk

@markwilfan. That only happens when you use a kms key on a client not when using the /skms switch.

I had a home machine that kept saying it was not valid after some windows updates, except when you look it says it's activated and genuine.

That code is the bugger!

 

Will have a look at what patches are installed and get the machine up to date on Monday (WSUS isn't working right at the moment which is a key summer project to sort out!)

 

It wouldn't usually be a great problem except this is the PC connected to a large TV in our Centre of Excellence which local employers often visit, if their first impression is 'running dodgy Windows' it isn't great first impression!
