Lego Mindstorms EV3 - cannot get it to launch in pupil accounts

I'm trying to get Lego Mindstorms EV3 working on our machines and have hit a wall.

 

Basically, when a pupil opens the software, all they get is an error saying "LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 has detected a problem during application launch", along with an Internet Explorer notification bar saying "An add-on for this website failed to run. Check the security settings in Internet Options for potential conflicts".

 

I've looked on the Lego support site and this article exists https://education.lego.com/en-us/lesi/support/product-support/mindstorms-education-ev3/ev3-software/ev3-software-launch-issue but it doesn't make any difference to reinstall Silverlight.

 

Pupils can launch Silverlight websites just fine, so Silverlight is running fine.

 

What needs to be authorised and where to get this to work?

Pretty sure this program has to be run in compatibility mode, probably for XP.

I'm wracking my brain. I think I had this issue & in the end I think I installed it by hand on the machines that had this issue. But I only had it on 2 or 3 at a time. If this is on all of them then it could be something else. Maybe try and reinstall/update silverlight?

I installed this onto all our ICT machines 170 of them and it works perfect on staff & student accounts with no modifications & running on windows XP

Not a lot of help to be honest, we're on Windows 7 as XP is now long out of support.

Finally managed to figure this out by rebuilding our pupil GPO from scratch.

 

I excluded all Internet Explorer settings and slowly added them back in. By default, the Internet Explorer 10 GPP item turns on Protected Mode for Intranet and Local Machine zones, it also applies a default security level that is more stringent than the default Internet Explorer 10 level. So, simply excluding those settings from the GPO has got it working.

Hi, I am having the exact issue you describe in this thread. Could you please confirm exactly what settings in group policy had to be changed / removed? Lego are being less that helpful! I will send you a PM as well.

The way I did it was to start afresh basically. I created a new OU in Active Directory, and placed a test user in it. I then created a brand new Group Policy, building it up bit by bit to mimic the existing pupil policy, whilst leaving out any IE stuff to start with, testing periodically to ensure EV3 was working.

 

Finally, I added an IE10 GPP item, but ensuring the protected mode was off for local machine and intranet zones.

Thanks for the reply. Since my last post I've be been trawling through our pupil GPO, and thanks to a careful reading of a GPRESULT /H report I think I've finally worked it out.

 

I had ensured that all settings in the GPO relating to Internet Explorer Add-Ons were to allow them (to ensure that Silverlight wasn't being blocked). I was looking at the settings under User Config -> Admin Templates -> Windows Components -> Internet Explorer -> Internet Control Panel -> Advanced Page. All the settings here were fine.

 

However, I missed a setting in User Config -> Admin Templates -> Windows Components -> Internet Explorer -> Security Features -> Add-on Management. The setting 'deny all add-ons unless specifically allowed in the add-on list" was enabled (which is bizarre- we do't use the add-on list to whitelist things, so there's no reason for this setting to have been enabled. Must have been something before my time).

 

Disabled that setting, force a gpupdate and the software works for pupils now
