Irlbrandon Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 (edited) I'm a tech for my local county school district. I am a 12 month employee, so I work while the schools are closed. Last year my crew and I went from school to school and upgraded all the machines that can be to Win 7. We got most of them done. However, we are stuck wondering what to do this summer. However, we are the ones left to find something to do. Do any of my fellow school techs have any suggestions of what to do until school's back in? Unfortunately, wiring maintenance is contracted out and software/images are handled by a different department. My team and I are limited to only end user support and with the end users gone for summer, we are stuck with pondering our ideas. Edited March 30, 2015 by Irlbrandon Grammar
NB9457 Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Do you have a call queue system? Build one or build upon it and add guide and how to info to try and reduce workload? Tidy up desks and offices, test equipment, clean equipment, cable tidying of the keyboard/mouse/monitor/power cables. Just lots of little things, I've been in the same position in the past, when I used to work at a high school and the kids were off 6 weeks and we had already upgraded the network prior I did some of the following: -Cleaned and tested all projectors -Cable tidied all IT suites -Updated all plugins and browser on clients -Cleaned monitors -Re-aligned projectors -Filled up all printers with low paper and toner so they were ready to be hammered -Made a few simple how to guides and popped them in an IT Support drive, along with contact info and shortcuts to helpdesk -Audited all equipment as we had things come and go during the year Then I also had the benefit of starting late and going home early. The quietest school holidays I've ever had, usually quite hectic.
LiamH Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 No outstanding jobs to be done? Any optimizations you can make? rework the profiles to streamline the log in time? sort out any shared files to archive old documents that haven't been touched in years? Clean equipment, test projectors, upgrade a few machines, make sure your documentation is all up to date, create a wiki, set up a ticketing system if you don't already have one in place. Are other staff still in like the site team/admin staff? if so pop your head around the door to see if they have anything that needs doing.
Duke5A Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Sheesh, summer is re-image season around here. There isn't a stray student machine that doesn't get blown off and loaded cleanly during this time.

Yeah we're doing the same this year - Office 2013 & Adobe CC7 - It's much cleaner than uninstalling the older versions & putting the new ones on top (especially as we only have 90gb SSDs so every little helps!) oh and if Windows 10 comes out in time... (June apparently!) I'll look at that too. Blank install of 10 is 11gb vs 24 for windows 7!
