Was it a California? Probably the roof piston on one side went. I've seen it happen when in very hot weather.

 

Yes a California. It was very warm a few days before and the van sat idle. This was 1st night in a rough German camp. Didn't notice until it was nearly down. We could manually push it to roughly the same position but it was never straight after. It did't do the final stretch of the canvas putting it up after that. The hire company had the job of sorting it when we got back.
