IE not starting unless you delete local profiles

Hi there

May I ask has anyone heard of this / seen this.

We've had a spate of IE not starting on pcs here. You click on it and nothing happens. When you delete the local profile from the pc the kids can open IE fine. It seems to be happening more and more. It's only IE that seems to be doing this ( no other apps).

We had something similar, IE 11 not loading when students login but loading when I login as local admin on a select number of machines. A reset of the problem students profiles seemed to fix the issues for us.

Thanks BFCIT. The thing is the student profile we have here is non writeable - it's one generic profile for all of them set to read only.

Make sure you DO NOT redirect the appdata folder this simply does not work well and kills IE randomly.

Thanks chazzzy. We don't redirect app data.....causes too much network traffic. I wonder why this issue has started happening. It seems to be happening on pcs the students haven't logged on to before but I can't be sure. If it were a corrupt profile fair enough but they haven't logged on to these machines.

Yep I get this sometimes.

 

We still use a mandatory profile (but don't redirect the app folder).

 

The process is - pupil logs in, which creates the local version of the mandatory profile as with any roaming profile, at which point IE will work fine. Then the pupil logs out (but leaves the cached profile of course) and any subsequent logins cause IE to fail to open.

 

Only way I got round it was to delete cached copies of roaming profiles on logoff via GPO for our IT Suite machines.

 

As this only happens with the mandatory profile, which is small, this doesn't affect our boot times. Doesn't happen with teacher roaming profiles.

 

Ideally I'd like to ditch the mandatory profile altogether but our IT Teacher is very particular about how office programs, IE etc should be laid out for pupils so it was easier just to use one.

Close i.e

Open ie with addons disabled

Press f12 to open developer tools

Close developer tools

Close ie

Open normal ie
