A new way to see and share your world with 360-degree video

You share incredible videos with your fans every second of the day, but what if you could share even more in that video? Like, sharing the entire moment that you’re filming?

You could let viewers see the stage and the crowd of your concert, the sky and the ground as you wingsuit glide, or you could even have a choose-your-own-adventure video where people see a different story depending on where they look. Only you know what’s possible. That’s why today we are starting to support 360-degree video uploads on YouTube, to continue giving you all the best resources to connect with your viewers.

People can watch your videos on the existing YouTube app for Android, and by moving the phone or tablet around they’ll see all the different angles while the video plays. They can do the same on youtube.com or embedded videos on Chrome by using the mouse to drag the point of view around, and we’re working to bring this to iPhone, iPad and other devices soon.

Creating and uploading 360-degree videos on YouTube

To make it easy for you to create and upload 360-degree videos to YouTube, we’ve been working with companies across the industry. Bublcam, Giroptic’s 360cam, IC Real Tech’s Allie, Kodak’s SP360 and RICOH THETA are 360-degree video cameras compatible with YouTube that are available today or are coming soon. You can find more technical information on the video format, along with a script you need to run on the video file to insert the correct metadata. We're working to make this automatic, but in the meantime, this script will make sure your video uploads to YouTube as a 360-degree video.

Ideally, I'd love to be able to embed videos as above into our VLE - take a 360-degree video of a school play or similar and make it available for play back. Does raise a couple of questions: does YouTube support private videos that can be embedded from a particular page - I understand that Vimeo does, does Vimeo support 360 degree video? Also, for a school play, a 270 degree field-of-view or similar would probably be more appropriate - no need to see the audience. Some parents are going to want a DVD version, so you'll need some kind of editing suite that can take a 360-degree view and let you pick an angle to show for the DVD. How do you go about editing 360-degree video footage?

Yes.

Making a video unlisted means that anyone who has the link to the video can view it. Your unlisted videos won’t appear to others who visit the Videos tab of your channel page and shouldn't show up in YouTube's search results unless someone adds your unlisted video to a public playlist.

To share an unlisted video, just share the link with the people who you’d like to have access to it, and they’ll be able to see it. Unlike private videos, the people you share the video with do not need a Google account to see the video. Anyone with the link can also re-share it in a number of ways, such as simply forwarding the link. If you don't want to allow others to re-share your video, make it Private.

does Vimeo support 360 degree video?

Not as far as I am aware, although I might be wrong. :)

For a DVD (or Blu-ray) I think you're going to have to "flatten" the video so that it appears the same way as it does in VLC when you play one of the YouTube videos above.

A lot of 360-degree cameras also come with their own player software so another option is to create a data DVD/BD-R containing the video and player for various operating systems.

Google have published the technical details on their spherical video format, so hopefully in the future other software will include support for it including HTML5 players like JW Player and mediaelement.js.

How do you go about editing 360-degree video footage?

With the Panocam 3D it's possible to use standard video editing software like Premiere Pro or Final Cut X to edit your footage. I'm not sure if this applies to other cameras though?

I reckon YouTube's video editor will be able to at some point too.

But I think for a viewer without a headet or other 360-degree viewing device there needs to be a "default" view, where the editor chooses the point of view for the viewer. If you're going to do that, you might as well render a standard YouTube video, it's just that in the editing stage you have a rather larger fild of view to choose when doing pan-and-scan. Very useful, it would save having to set up several different cameras when recording a production.

Embedding VR Views

VR Views allow you to embed 360 degree VR media into websites on desktop and mobile, and native apps on Android and iOS. This technology is designed for developers of traditional apps to enhance them with immersive content. For example, VR Views make it easy for a travel app to provide viewers with an underwater scuba diving tour as they plan vacation or for a home builder to take prospective buyers on virtual walkthrough before the home is built.

VR Views also address a common developer concern, namely the limited availability of VR hardware amongst the general public. Although VR Views support true stereoscopic VR playback through compatibility with Google Cardboard, they default to a simple “magic window” mode that works on everything from desktop browsers to mobile apps without any special hardware.

Supported Platforms

VR Views handle almost all of the difficult and time consuming work to ensure compatibility across a range of browsers and mobile operating systems. With a small number of notable exceptions, VR Views work across all modern browsers and mobile operating systems.

Web

  • Modern versions of Chrome on Windows, OSX, Linux, Android and iOS.
  • Modern versions of Safari on OSX and iOS.
  • Modern versions of Firefox on Windows, OSX and Linux.
  • Modern versions of IE 11 and Edge on Windows.

Native

  • iOS 8 and higher.
  • Android 4.4 (Kit Kat) and higher.

Supported Formats

VR Views support mono and stereo 360 images and videos across the web, Android, and iOS. Images and video need to be stored in the equirect-pano (equirectangular panorama) format, which is a common format supported by many capture solutions.

The VR View code can be downloaded from GitHub.
