Wireless Bridge

Hello All,

 

I am in the process of setting up a remote office for 8 users (8x Desktops and 8x VOIP phones), I was planning on getting a fiber optic line put in, but after getting quotes averaging 3K for this I want to investigate alternatives.

 

Would a wireless point-of-sight bridge be suitable. Its the VOIP quality that's my main concern, I don't suppose all 8 will be on the phone at the same time, but 3 or so could be simultaneously whilst someone else is downloading a large file etc. Would a decent enough wireless bridge be suitable for this? Please advise?

What kind of wireless bridge were you hoping to use and how remote is remote?

 

Personally, I've not had much success with wireless bridges but I've always had to do them on the cheap. I have heard good things about the AirFiber products (https://www.ubnt.com/products/) and some of the laser links (which are cool because they use lasers and everyone knows lasers are best!).

Honestly remote isn't very remote no more than about 250m, its a difficult path to cable as there are some quite tall metal framed structures in the way, but I should still be able to get a good line of sight.

 

I was more looking at 5GHz line of sight WiFi based bridges, but open to advice on this. I've got no fixed budget on this per-say so long as its a saving on 3K and reliability is worth it.

Have a look at the Repeatit Trinity PtP Links.

Great links, preconfigured and well priced.

Unfortunately the Ubiquiti and Repeatit bridges only support around 200mb Full Duplex.

That might be fine for your phones and a bit of web surfing for 8 users but as most desktops are gigabit nowadays if you are planning any serious LanParties Maybe I would look at something with a little more throughput.

 

QOS will take care of the VoiP concerns and even 8 users is unlikely to want more than about megabit.

 

That leaves about 99mb for your LAN activities.

Plenty for 8 users to surf the web and do some basic stuff but if they are heavy hitting SIMs users or using network intensive apps is 100mbps networking good enough?
