Hosting Filtering service on AWS

I was just wondering if it may be possible to host some sort of filtering service on AWS and force all traffic to go via it.

 

The scenario is fairly simple. I have been asked to put a single AP in a village hall, but to make sure it's safe (ie filtered) So my plan was to host the Unifi controller on AWS, which I've got working fine, but I was wondering if it was possible to then some how route all traffice from that AP via another AWS instance that is running something like Smoothwall lite and then out online.

 

More a project than an imminent need, but does anyone think it's possible and how it might be done?

Reinventing the wheel might cause a few support calls. Something like the home halo - Home Halo - your internet guardian angel which is due out shortly might do what you need (although there is a small subscription fee)?

Thanks for the idea, but that's an all in one AP/Router. Due to the space it does really require a seperate AP and I was also hoping to be able to use the same AWS instance for filtering multiple sites but all from one simple interface.

Basically, something like Meraki but without the massive cost.

it should be doable although it might be worth considering OpenDNS, I wouldn't rely on it in a school for anything more than a last line of defence but for home/not so tight filtering use it should be fine.

Depending on what it is for (ie Not school related) you could look at PurpleWifi. They filter and can be used with lots of different AP models

You could look at Draytek routers/APs and then use their global view filtering service. Or a draytek router and unifi WAPs.

I was looking at those, was just hoping for something centrally controllable for several sites.

We've managed to get Smoothwall on AWS, but it's a real hassle. You could definitely go down the linux+dansguardian route though?
