Don't get too excited but there is a rumour that Apple may be considering making changes to Apple ID requirement for app distribution...

I hope this rumour is true. iPads are a total PITA to deal with at the moment.

 

I guess the following has something to do with it...

 

Google's Chromebooks overtake Apple's iPads for the first time in U.S. education market

 

Apple's iPad has lost its lead over Google's line of Chromebook laptops in the U.S. education market as Google shipped more devices to schools last quarter, according to figures released by IDC (via the Financial Times). In Q3 2014, IDC notes that Google shipped 715,500 Chromebooks to U.S. schools while Apple shipped 702,000 iPads. Analysts note that this advantage for Google's Chromebooks can be attributed to their low cost, which starts at $199 for some models.

Makes me wonder why Apple don't produce products for education, e.g. versions of macbooks and iPads with plastic shells and cheaper components

The kind of use to, we have an eMac in school, the e being for Education and its got Mac OS X on it so its from 2000 onwards.

I hope that's true as well. However, Apple doing something useful? Won't be soon, certainly!

Really hope this is the case. That would really help in terms of deployment. Hopefully they can re-vamp the dreadful Apple Configurator app as well. What with Google pushing for education at the moment and the way they're working with EduAdmins it seems that Apple are now finally having to do something about their shoddy work of app deployment. It would be nice for them to allow for multiple User profiles as well.

 

A simple solution that they should have implemented is a cloud based MDM where you can create a home screen on dependent on the user that's logged in, then this home screen and all the apps included get pushed out to the iPads. It's a simple yet powerful way to manage iPads in a shared environment and how the innovators at Apple never thought up this concept is beyond me.

Because they just don't care. They have only really caught on in schools to begin with because users like them. They never intended to be so involved in schools.

Learnpad have done exactly this! It works pretty well as long as the staff get proper training

Ipads are a good product but a pain to manage.

So glad we only have a few for SLT to use!

I know We have 1 LearnPad here but the school was already heavily invested into the Apple eco-system before I got here, so Im stuck with these iPads at the moment!

I think someone who subscribes to Edugeek was sent an e-mail by an actual Apple Support engineer it stated:

 

"To conclude, IPads are meant to be stand alone devices. They are not computers and are not designed to be used as part of a network"

 

I have a copy of this stuck on my wall and the words are highlighted so when Teaching staff come in to see me they can read it quite clearly.

 

We have monitored the use of all our wireless devices and the best ones to date which are used the most and give good value for money are the HP100e notebooks which are now obsolete but we still have 35 of them and they work very well indeed with Windows 7 pro.

 

Our IPads don't get used that much and then only by Teaching members of staff for their own personal stuff vary rarely are they used for delivering lessons.

 

Been watching Chromebooks for a couple of years now to see their advancement into the education sector and it seems they have done their homework.

iPads in education are now so far behind the likes of LearnPad / Google when it comes to mass deployment it's laughable. This is to little to late, not that it will bother the Apple faithful.

The whole iPads in education has been a debacle from the outset and I continue to take a deep breath and chuckle whenever I hear a Head Teacher or SLT member say they want a class full of iPads!

 

Apple is a consumer driven hardware manufacturer, it's only aim is to sell its hardware to as many individuals as is humanly possible.

There is nothing to be made from sharing 30 iPads with 800 pupils.

Far better to sell 800 iPads!

That's just common business sense.

 

Google on the other hand are selling their services designed to be accessed by all from anywhere using anything... Hardware is not the driver here.

 

The only places I've see iPads remotely usable en mass is where they have been deployed on 1:1 basis.

Everybody's iPad is continuously connected back to their own authenticated data store.

All of the added headaches such as sharing the device in the first place, authentication, Proxies, Pac Files, WebDav, Foldr, theft and damage simply make the whole thing almost laughable.

 

The amount of time, effort and money being wasted on trying to make iPads behave like windows machines is bordering on a criminal waste of tax payers money.

 

I heard the funniest story the other day of a school that bought a suite of Macs, they immediately loaded boot camp to dual boot to Windows!

Some weeks later a technician mistakenly set SCCM to actually re image them with Windows...

It was 3 weeks until someone actually noticed that OSX wasn't installed anymore.... They are still running Windows as nobody could be bothered to restore them!!!

 

If people want iPads let them BYOD and stop wasting my taxes.

If the functionality required is not native to the device then buy the right device... Stop wasting everybody's time trying to make an iPad a PC or a PC a Mac!

I don't care where you've been "consulting". The fact that I have to create 35 Apple IDs just for a class set of them is a pain the back side. Can't even do that in one sitting as you can only create so many IDs per IP address.

Not if you follow the relevant procedure and have Apple whitelist the IP / domain.

If they are not designed to be used as part of a network why do the come with TCP/IP and WiFI support?
