enbiggen Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 We have around 200 shared iPads (don't ask), which were set up just before IOS 7 came out. They all share a common Apple ID - which is probably not the best solution any more, but we're probably stuck with it, as paid for apps are attached to that ID (they were bought before the new VPP scheme Apple introduced). However, we're now having iPads constantly prompting for the Apple ID, and no amount of clicking cancel will stop them. Often the Apple ID will be locked (presumably because someone's typed in the wrong password multiple times), so we have to unlock it first, before we can type the password in successfully. Is there anyway to counter this? We've also noticed that iPads that have been reimaged tend to not prompt for the Apple ID as soon, while the longer the iPad has gone before reimaging, the more likely it is to persistently prompt. Is there a "one true way" of handling shared iPads? (They seem to be the bane of my existence.) Thanks.
Tammie Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 How are you managing them? I'm no expert but I have managed to deploy apps silently with Meraki (see here). Right or wrong, I have all 131 of them on one ID. 1
enbiggen Posted March 3, 2015 Author Posted March 3, 2015 Hi, We use Apple Configurator for the initial setup, and we use Profile Manager. (While Profile Manager can silently push out apps, and we've had some success with that, we don't tend to use it, as reimaging with Apple Configurator usually turns out better. We didn't really have a problem with Airwatch MDM pushing out apps even, previously.) The issue with the Apple ID *seems* to have coincided with iOS 8 (although that could be my mind trying to come up with patterns). Thanks.
Tammie Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I'm always trying to look for a pattern! Sorry I can't help.
Michael Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 If imaging using iTunes for example, make sure the backup is encrypted, otherwise it will keep asking for the ID password even if it's correct. Another lovely Apple 'feature' 1
tmoon-mint Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 If you have set restrictions for age rated content, for example restricted apps to 12+ it will always prompt you for the Apple ID when installing apps. Could be whats causing your problem. 1
enbiggen Posted March 3, 2015 Author Posted March 3, 2015 Hi, It doesn't appear when installing content - it just "appears" supposedly randomly. I will look into the restricted apps age limit, but I don't think I applied any age restrictions except on explicit lyrics, movies etc (none of which they should be able to download anyway). Thanks.
tmoon-mint Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Another thing to check, has the password for the Apple ID changed recently? Could be that the old one has been stored if you use iCloud keychain. 1
enbiggen Posted March 3, 2015 Author Posted March 3, 2015 Hi, We haven't changed the password (and hope that we never have to, as that's 200 devices to go around :-) It was a good idea though. Thanks.
Brimstone Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 If you have set restrictions for age rated content, for example restricted apps to 12+ it will always prompt you for the Apple ID when installing apps. Could be whats causing your problem. Age ratings restrictions will always ask for an Apple ID so should not be applied when deploying via Managed Distribution but as you are not using unique Apple ID's I doubt this is the issue here. When it comes to those schools that have implemented iPads very early, (in your case before VPP even arrived) Apple are known to be extremely accommodating with those already paid for apps that are now tied to the single Apple ID that you have been using. I would in the first instance speak to your local Apple Education Solutions Expert, ASE's have some direct contact with Apple to make the case on your behalf regarding the apps you have paid for. Those of you that reckon it works with a single Apple ID and MDM solution will be I'm afraid in the end always proved wrong, this is because you may have deployed iPads with settings such as automatic download.... Automatic Download turned on means that the MDM is not deploying or pushing the app to the iPad, the app is in fact coming from the app store. Apple have recently changed this so that iPads that have this setting turned on and are enrolled into an MDM solution will now request the Apple ID and password to install the app, you need to ensure this setting is turned off and your MDM solution can send the install command to the iPad, there are probably a few that have not implemented this new command as yet, support details form Apple below. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202995 1
Marshall_IT Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 (edited) How long ago did you make the password? Does it meet the latest requirements? It might be prompting because it needs updating. Also the terms of use has changed a while ago, i think it asks for the Apple id of you need to accept the new terms. If you enter the password does it stop asking? Also, last thought to help track it down, download the Apple iPhone diagnostic tool, forgot the name right now, and wait for it to ask, then you'll see exactly what is prompting it.
