Splitting this off from the cool things thread.

@CAM @Garacesh @sted @DMcGuigan @Arreks

don't you just copy the sd card to a micro sd and loose nothing as I don't want to lose my fire emblem saves

Yes and no.

You can tell it to do a system transfer that way [copying to PC then the new card], but you still physically need both 3DS.

The savedata is coded to only work with the console it was made on, so it needs the new one about to get the allow code.

I'd assume there's some kind of protection on downloaded software.. I'd bought the original Mario on my 3DS but when I bought a 3DSXL at Christmas (since DS' don't really have accounts of sorts) I 'lost' it.. Didn't try to transfer it over as I don't particularly care, but I'd imagine there is some kind of DRM so that you don't download stuff and then pass it around willy-nilly.

Pretty much. The old way was that everything was tied to one console.

You want it on a different one? You send it to Ninty.

Now it's tied to your NNID, but THAT's tied to one console [1 Wii U and 1 3DS]... so you can move it with a system transfer, which formats the old one, but it's basically the same as it used to be.

Le EDIT:

That Pikachu plate... do want.

Nintendo seem to still be a bit backwards with their download stuff. It should be an NNID login is sufficient to use and re-download software but they are still pulling this rubbish. Especially important for a 3DS as they are more likely to get lost on the bus or stolen.

Rookies to the online platform world I guess. :p

Pretty much what I was saying when I was doing the transfer. :p

To be fair though, Nintendo's network doesn't seem to be full of racist 12 year olds.

And the eshop, as far as I know, has no crappy "indie" games.

so I cant just copy my crud across sign in with my Nintendo id and it works?

Not unless you're insanely lucky and the console code is the same. :p

I think, though I may be wrong, that physical copies of games aren't tied to anything as the save is on the game card.

Ohhh that's OK then. I have a physical copy of Pokémon XY :p

Also searched for Eevee backplates, looks like a blank plate plus sticker off Etsy job.

oh good my Mario kart and Zelda files will work just not fire emblem grrrr might have to either just not bother or suck it and see hmmm. Whats the point in a requiring a Nintendo id for the store if its tied to the console. So does that mean if I dropped my 3ds in the sink and it dies any digital content I had is effectively useless and I couldn't redownload on a replacement console?

I'd check it with someone else's 3DS first. I'm not 100% sure of it.

Well... you DO get blank plates with the N3DS.

You should check out the Japanese Amazon... So many custom plates.

Pretty much.

Though, you allegedly get onto ninty support and they'll remove the old console from your NNID. Then it's a case of getting the new one, logging in and downloading everything again.

Pfft... This thread. It's all about the Wii U bruh, Bayo 2 is love, Bayo 2 is life.

Bayo 2, which I have.

And told YOU to get. :p

TBH XL defeats the point of a portable console anyway.

Makes a decent tent though. :p

I've been through this all last week after setting up the Wii U, a horribly disjointed and long process - You can't sign in until you have installed an update, but you can't install an update until you've signed in. And you can only create an account on the device! Arrggghhhh!

Seriously, Nintendo need to hire some people who know how this stuff should flow.

The kids aren't getting the console until Easter when I shall have the fun job of transferring all of the Wii content, a process which is, I'm led to belive, like a really bad trip to the dentist.

My daughter has a 3Ds and we picked one up as new silly cheap on eBay for my sons birthday in June and I'm so not looking forwards to getting them all talking to each other.

Nintendo. Great games but awful, awful back-end processes.

Virtual Console stuff?

It's a 10 step program. The first step is admitting you're an Nintendoholic.

Wii to Wii U transfer.

Basically the same as what I had to do with my 3DS.

I still have to get started on Smash Bros. Transistor keeps distracting me atm (free on PS+).

Play it all the time with family, can accidentally find ourselves spending 3+ hours on the game, love it!!! Still yet to unlock every character though, my fave is Mario or Charazard.

I still need to GET Smash... and Transistor.

Nintendo, Mario Maker please.

I know the good practice guidelines for mario levels but I expect 99% of the public doesn't and will thus make total trash. Still have fun and some challenges for you guys though. :)

Not if I start speculating that, since N3DS is of similar power to Wii U, you might be able to play Mario Maker levels on it. :p

(Also LA filter says no).

A Wii, definitely. Not sure about Wii U...

Maybe they'll release something to download and play the levels for 3DS.

It's an insane custom mario level.

I'm guessing a hold right music level or one of those insane ones that can't be completed without assist tools and excessive save states.
