Windows and Mac

So I started a new job in June last year and since then have been using a Mac as my main machine at work and at home, and strangly enough im starting to find that I prefer a windows machine at work. Im finding that its easier to get things done on a windows machine, shared drives, printing, remote desktop, things just seem quicker, mayber because im used to keyboard shortcuts.

 

Anyone else found the same?

Personally I find everything easier on a Windows machine, though I'm likely biased as Windows is the vast majority of all I've ever used. My first PC was Win95 and I've stuck with Windows since then. I've used Macs and a few different flavours of Linux and whilst I don't see anything intrinsically wrong with them, they're not what I'm used to and thus pose a barrier to efficient work.

I use Windows at Work, although when I was a telecomms engineer a couple of years back it was Linux throughout... Laptop and PC at work were Linux. Very rarely touched anything Windows back then. These days working for an IT Support company I find it easier to use Windows.... Its also easier when a client may call "Oh how do I do...." I can replicate it on screen with a few clicks of the Mouse.

 

At Home my 2 Office PC's are Linux and Windows 8.1. I use the Linux machine if I want a website quickly or am just browsing the web - but any sort of client management / remote jobs is usually done on the Windows machine - I have Outlook setup on my Windows Office PC's too.

I have a Mac on my desk for configuring Ipads, 95% of its usage is streaming radio and running a multi-vnc to monitor some dashboard machines.

 

Everything else is done on my PC, its a lot easier to diagnose problems when you can replicate it on your end, and for showing people how to do things when they come into your office helps too.

I have both on my desk. With the Mac it's way easier to take over the classroom Macs when somebody wants to show me a problem. The W7 box is what I do most of my work on, but I use very few M$ programs apart from Notepad. While I have M$ Office, I mostly use OpenOffice simply because I think is it a much better suite. I find the menus more logical and I can do much more with tables. I have improved M$ Office by installing UBitMenu. Similarly, I have CS6 but I find the Gimp far easier to drive. I use my own personal Linux laptop (Fedora 16) for recovering those pesky USB sticks which the students fail to safely remove. I also use Linux at home and I have done so for the last 17 years. In fact, I have never used Windows at home.

 

I do find the Windows interface extremely primitive. I am limited to one desktop, I still have to ctrl/c , ctrl/v for copy & paste (with Linux I highlight the text, move the mouse and left/right click together and the text is pasted in), I find it really frustrating that in Windows, when I highlight a url in a text file nothing happens (automatically opens in my default web browser on Linux), I hate it that I constantly have to install extra software on Windows to get it to do the most basic things, such as AlwaysOnTop, SuperFinderXT and Cygwin (to give me some decent command line utilities such as grep, less, find, etc).
