Munki 2 Setup?

I just recently started to look into the use of Munki here at the campus but while looking into it Munki 2 was release just over a week ago.

 

Has anyone gone through a successful setup of Munki 2? I've setup a new Yosemite server a few times now to buld one from scratch with OS X Server but I've had no luck.

 

I've gone through the Demonstration Setup and everything seems to be fine until I get to a test import. When I do so I'm told:

/Users/Shared/munki_repo is missing catalogs

Could not connect to munki repo

 

 

Would I be better off setting up Munki 1 then upgrading to 2? Great to see the documentation but I'm missing something and no idea what.

Munki 2 has been out since september 2014 Munki 2.2 came out last week which adds native profiles support.

 

I wouldn't even bother trying to set it up on OSX Server, Apple has shown very little interest in there server side of things since they dropped the xserve. I would use Linux or even Windows as its only a web server your setting up.

ya noticed that. There doesn't seem to be anything super clear on setup and use. The videos I watch seem to use the admin application where as when I downloaded the application I get the Managed Software Center. All videos seem to show older versions and all the documents show terminal commands/setup.

 

Has anyone come across a clear how to document or video on the setup of Munki Server and it's use?

 

I currently have the server somewhat running. I did the test by importing FireFox finally but nothing shows up in the Managed Software Center.

 

After a few weeks of testing and setup I'm close to giving up on Munki. It sounds like a great service but finding a clean setup and showing the use of it seems to be, well not great

Munki admin is a separate tool which is not written by the Munki developers thats why you can't find it when you download the munki package. I use the Munki Admin to manage my repo, it is a great tool.

 

Be careful googling Munki Server as again this is another piece of software which isn't part of a standard install.

 

All you need for Munki is a Webserver with 5 folders Pkgs, Pkgsinfo, catalogs, icons, manifests. I would aim to get this working first so you can browse from your client machine to munki.domainname.com/repo/pkgs etc once you can do this then start adding your software.

I would personally go for a Linux/UNIX server if you can. Apache on Windows has a habit of under performing.

Would IIS be suitable?

Last time I tried using Munki with IIS was about 2 years ago. It wasn't good.

 

Apache will install and run under Windows, it just requires a high hardware spec and is noticeably slower than Linux.

If you go down the Windows route i wouldn't use Apache, i would use IIS on server 2012 or 2012 R2.

You can probably have it up and running with about 5 lines of powershell.

 

Never seen or heard of an issue running it under IIS, i use linux and apache myself but only because we run munki web admin on the same box and some frameworks weren't available for IIS.
