alfatec Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Hi, We have got a 70 Macs bound to Active directory and using a Yosemite server with Profile Manager configured. All works well, the Profile Manager does it's job, the Macs receive push notifications and the Home folder and shared drives get mapped but the only problem we seem to be having is that the network home folder and student shared folder from the Windows servers do not appear in the dock. When they are mapped in the Login items and dock items they just appear as a question mark. Have got 'Unc path from Active Directory etc' ticked and 'Force local home directory' unticked. In profile manager have got Network home ticked under dock items. Any help most appreciated.
Hulbert99 Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Just found out why mine was doing this @alfatec They were shared as \\server\users\homedrive To test I reshared it as \\server\homedrive and it worked straight away... So either need to find out why OSX doesnt like homedrive in subfolders or re-share 1700 home folders

alfatec Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 Yes ours are mapped \\server\students\homedrive. Do you have profile details in the properties box of active directory. How did you resolve without resharing?
Hulbert99 Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 In AD we have the home drive mapped as \\server\users\homedrive To fix it I did the following with help from @DMcCoy Give the students read, this folder only, on the students folder (Advanced in Security) Then turn on Access Based Enumeration on the students folder as well so they only see their own home folder. Can you send me some screen shots of your profile manager setup. 1 from the dock settings and 1 from the login settings. If I put a tick in 'put homefolder on startup disk' then the network home folder maps correctly to the dock but as soon as I take it out it goes.

davidacland Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Hi, When you use the "Use UNC path to derive network home location" checkbox in Directory Utility it puts the top level share on the desktop and the users network home in the Dock. This is a feature of the AD plugin in directory utility. When the user logs in the Dock icon often shows as a ?. This is a known bug that has been around since 10.3 I'm afraid. We work around this by unchecking the "Use UNC path..." checkbox and using a login script to mount the drive. We don't often add the icon to the Dock but if we do need to we use dockutil in a script. For shared network drives, if you are deploying via Profile Manager, this will only add them to the desktop as its a different process to the mounting of the user home via directory utility. If you wanted them added to the dock you would have to use a dock config profile in profile manager or a dockutil script. Hope this helps. David Acland - Amsys
alfatec Posted February 13, 2015 Author Posted February 13, 2015 Hi, Thanks for the information. Have got a shared drive mapped to the desktop and think will go with the option of a login script for the home drive. Last challenge now is setting Safari homepage and Office 2011 first run settings.
davidacland Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 If its 10.9 or 10.0 I would set those with configuration profiles. If you do a search on github you will probably find some that have already been created.
slancaster Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 we just map homedrive at login with no scripts, just the default mac set up at AD bind and then set a MCX redirect to create an alias on the users desktop. works a treat.
