Public Ip address yhgfl?

On setting up apple caching server we had to get into the world of public IP addresses we have found ours changes from one to another and is barley static for more than a few seconds the ips are traced back to yhgfl and on ringing a couple of other schools in the area thy too are using the same public IP addresses as usual we cant get any sense out of anyone? my question is would a constantly changing public ip effect anything else? anyone on yhgfl experience the same or have apple caching server working? our 2 public ips end .20 and .22? sorry to be a bit vague but its a headache trying to get virgin/yhgfl/lea to help ?

Our provider had a bank of ~10 public IP's that it cycled through, putting in any of those worked.

I think I have read that when a number of schools use the same public IP addresses - as is the case when using a typical LEA service - there are issues with some Apple services/products. Can't remember the details but have a search around the forums.

 

Ideally you need your own static public IP.

Sounds like they are using CGNAT (Carrier Grade NAT). That can cause a world of pain if you need any ports forwarding if another school already has them on the same IP address. I don't understand why they wouldn't give a school their own real world IP address. Even if they don't have enough left to dish out you can still buy them from other ISP's that have too many easily enough.

cheers guys kinda looking like we were moved onto a 10m home broadband instead of business? but cant get a straight answer on this so just speculation/

According to someone in the know Dave, they moved most schools to a CGNAT model last year due to not being able to issue further real world IP addresses and could see the problem escalating, although this is via word of mouth and not first hand from YHGFL so take this with a pinch of salt, just in case! Which if it is right this does seem to make sense.

 

IP V6 anyone how about a /64 with 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 IP Addresses. Being serious though, CGNAT is fine for home users (just about) disaster waiting to happen for business or education. For clarification, like most decent education ISP's we give out a block of 8 real world IP's (V4) to anyone needing them, anything above that we look at on a case by case basis, based on current RIPE guidelines.

wont speculate too much but been told we wont get a static ip under a system that has been in place mere months may have to look elsewhere, we were put on a 10m connection even tho we have a fibre connection straight into school? left over from an old system than went belly up i gather?

It was the 10Mb fiber line. I work two schools the fiber to building is 10Mb the fiber to cabinet and copper into school one gets around 30Mb. When I phoned to check it was correct I was told they limit the fiber connection due to costs.

 

TBH I'm not very happy as both school pay the same yet one is a lot faster than the other.

yup costs a fortune but due to various connections to LEA and sims its become engrained and difficult to move from...allegedly pricing up a 100m connection but looks pricey and still almost useless if we expand Ipads having a working caching server would save strain on the system so catch 22.
