WSUS re-install

I ended up trying to remove the WSUS server as it wasn't set up very well by the old tech a few years ago and it has just been getting worse and just didn't really work anyway. I finally managed to completely remove it to the stage where I can no re-install it. However when I try to reinstall it using a Windows Internal Database it throws up an error saying it could not install Windows Internal Database.

If I try and install it using an existing database it get's a lot further but during the "copying new files" part it throws up the error message:

Could not open key: UNKOWN\Components\7323F9765E4664E6999102DE03322\25B648779C414CF4EB36EF60FA054124. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel. I'm sure that it only creates that registry key when you try and install WSUS and I am logged in as the local admin. So I am completely stuck, I have tried googling for help but no avail.

What OS version? Can you open said key in regedit and poke the security permissions on the last key that exists? If I had to guess I would say the previous install set security on that registry key that only someone with domain admin can alter and not local admin. Try logging on as a domain admin and try it again.

I had a problem recently with a reinstall and WSUS just would not output clients, I found out after much google-fu that it was down to WSUS not removing the IIS site that it creates automatically, so you may want to remove everything and make sure the site gets removed from IIS on the box to stop that happening, if what you have going on is possibly because its having problems with website permissions as I had.

Server 2008R2, I have tried doing that but as soon as you click okay to cancel the install it deletes that registry key and recreates it when I try to re-install it, but it doesn't give me enough time to change the permissions before it throws up the error message.

 

Weirdest thing is happening, I might just be having one of those days, but whenever I try log on locally or as the domain admin it logs me on with the same account :S

It is my understanding the on a domain controller or domain-joined server, the local admin IS the domain admin. I was taught on a course that there is essentially no such thing as local admin on a server.

No, this is only true on domain controllers; domain joined servers still have a local admin account. The OP stated that he was was logged on the WSUS server as a local admin, so I took it that WSUS is not running on a DC.
