[sccm 2012] New SCCM installation. Tips?

Morning All,

 

Looking to move from a Server 2008r2 install of SCCM 2012 to a Server 2012 install of SCCM 2012 R2. The existing DB is on a separate 2008r2 box which we'll be looking to move \ start a fresh on a 2012 box as well.

 

What's the best course of action? Ideally I'd like to start from scratch with a brand new install so I can learn from all the previous mistakes but curious if this is even possible as I've been told before you can't reuse the same site name \ have more than one site on the same domain but not sure if that's true or not. Is this possible?

Yes it's possible, we did exactly that, moving from 2008R2 & SCCM 2012 to 2012 R2 and SCCM 2012 R2. Same site name, although I did export & import the site settings. I cant remember the exact process but it went surprisingly smoothly.

A swing migration is a supported scenario and is one that's facilitated by SCCM 2012. When I upgraded from 2007 R3 to 2012 SP1, I set up a brand new 2012 site alongside the existing 2007 one. Using this scenario, you can't use the same site code but packages, OSD bits, compliance rules etc can be carried across easily.

 

You will also want this, it will convert legacy packages into applications. A huge time saver!

Sorry to hijack but in a similar position...

 

In terms of rebuilding SCCM from scratch on a new box if I use the same site code as the old server can I get the clients back by simply doing a push install of the SCCM client to overwrite the old one?
