Recording music performances

This is my brief

 

Would you be able to cost us out some flip cams (or equivalent)that would be suitable for recording students assessment in music (so good quality audio as well as visual). Our Dictaphones are not good enough sound quality wise to achieve

outstanding according to the LEA

 

What would people recommend? We have some 4th gen ipod touchs but from the above I dont think the quality will be what they require. No idea of budget yet unfortunately but they require 4-5 of them.

Personally, I'd record the audio and video separately. I'd use something like a Zoom H1 field recorder to record first-class sound (place it amongst the musicians, or wherever the sound mix is best), then overdub the recorded audio to video taken with another camera. Thanks for the suggestion, although this would produce a much better result no doubt I don't think the time or skills are available in the dept to do that option. An all in one option is preferable

That looks very promising. Zoom are a sound device company, so it would be a safe bet to say the sound would be good. Check some reviews and Youtube demos, this could be just what you need. Use a tripod, handling noises would ruin a recording. Edited February 2, 2015 by jinnantonnixx

You've obviously never used the Zoom digital 8 track that i recorded the demo of my first band on then? Awful quality all around!

 

That said, for this job you don't need studio quality, you just need to be able to hear what's going on.

 

Just be aware that it it's too noisy even the best of mics will distort and ruin a recording... It might be best to look for somehting with an in-built compressor so the overly enthusiastic musicians don't spoil the sound on tape.
