MattDLEA Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I have a test lab with a 2012r2 servers . One is called MAINSERVER which I set up as a DC. I have another called FILEServer which I have now promoted to a DC and added to the current domain. I have shutdown the MAINSERVER and got a virtual pc to log on to the domain. It takes slightly longer to log on then when the main server is up, but doing a nltest /dsgetdc:school.local I get DC: \\MainServer.school.local Address \\10.2.0.10 Both of which are details of the one that's turned off? Is this correct or should it come up with DC :FileServer Address:\\10.2.0.11 ?
MattDLEA Posted January 30, 2015 Author Posted January 30, 2015 S its all set up properly then It was just to test what would happen if a server went down. I can log on which I assume is the main reason of having a secondary DC
SHimmer45 Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 i deleted my reply as i think i worded it wrong 100% sure it was correct:confused: the fact that it logged in means that the other DC is doing its job, the off DC is still going to be listed in AD/DNS unless its demoted. 1
SHimmer45 Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 if you left it off on the remaining DC you will find the event viewer will be full of replication issues and it grumbling about not being able to talk to the other DC
MattDLEA Posted January 30, 2015 Author Posted January 30, 2015 Thanks @SHimmer45 Slightly confused as the first server was handled DHCP. The secondary doesnt have that installed. So I'm guessing the best way is to have a main server that is the primary DC and DHCP and a secondary DC also with DHCP with conflict detection enabled?
SHimmer45 Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 with DHCP you can enable failover to another host. if the client machine was not rebooted after your DHCP scope was turned off it will keep the address it was given until the lease time runs out or the machine is restarted/network stack is and then it broadcast a for an address as normal and if you DHCP is off it wont get an address
MattDLEA Posted January 30, 2015 Author Posted January 30, 2015 So if the lease is a 10 days for example and all machines in the building were turned on on say day 1 and they all got an IP the DHCP server could be down for day 2-8 for example with no ill effects?
MattDLEA Posted January 30, 2015 Author Posted January 30, 2015 Ok Both DC's are down now but i can still log on? is this going to be a cached account?
