SCCM Image Deployment

Hi guys,

 

We're currently installing SCCM2012. I'm sure it's going to be very useful for us.

 

I have a query that I hope someone can answer. Deploying OS images seems dreadfully slow in comparison with our Server 2012, WDS server. Is this a config issue or did you find the same?

 

The image is identical in size on both.

If you're doing it multicast there's a 100meg speed limit by default but you can change it

Just looked in and we don't have multicast enabled, so it's not that. Any other suggestions?

What sort of difference in speed are you seeing?

 

We've noticed major drops in speed if the SCCM server hasn't had a reboot in a a while - so we just have it set to reboot every few days.

Have you fully patched up SCCM with all the rollups? There was a bug with SCCM 2012 (Maybe R2) and this a while back. I had to patch SCCM and then redistribute the Boot image.

It's taking us well over an hour to deploy an image that would have take 10 mins on the WDS server. I've tried rebooting it. It's almost like when it's trying to process the task sequence.

 

I've loaded the server with resources, as it seems SCCM & SQL are seriously thirsty!

 

I've just read on tech net about a possible hotfix, so @FN-GM could be right. I will post again later when I've checked that everything is up-to-date.

Just thought I'd time my standard office image download (10GB) and it's just over 6 minutes unicast and just over 2 minutes multicast on a 6ish year old dell e5500

I'm on sccm 2012r2 cu3 (5.0.7958.1401) on windows 2012 (not r2)

The only other thing I've done that might make a difference is change the RamDiskTFTPBlockSize registry key as the smaller number it had before didn't let the nucs pxe boot. I don't remember it affecting the imaging time though but it may have improved the pxe boot time.

I've never used WDS though so maybe mine is slow and I've never noticed.

Still much the same to be honest. I can get an image on the machine, but it doesn't enable the local administrator account and also doesn't join the domain.

 

Man SCCM is complicated!

You'll want to go look through the smsts.log file on the freshly imaged machine to find out why things are failing.

I've got a few machines to image so I'm having to point pxe back to the original wds server. I'll post the logs to see if they make sense.

 

I did look in there but I recall the errors were generic.

I abandoned it and moved onto other things. WDS was still doing a job so there was no urgency to solve it. I'll have another look in the summer.
